Northside won the first

the Panthers for most of the

the Eagles aced the tying
point at 20-all and scored on
a kill for her team’s first lead.

a reflection of the society
that bred him, nurtured
him, and then turned him
loose on higher education.
Such behavior has filtered
down to the Little League
level. A young man hits a
home run and jogs the bases
with a raised fist.
“See me! I’m cool! I’m
bad!” Alas, his team didn’t
make it to the Little League
championship game, so what
is he now?
Another Little Leaguer is
slapped on national televi
sion by his coach for uttering
a four-letter word. Thanks
to the coach and player, ABC
went to five-second delays to
avoid any other embarrass
ing acts.
I’ve railed about such ego
istic behavior before. To me,
it is shallow pride that lasts
only as long as the player or
the team is successful.
When the going gets
tough, the showoffs cave.
They can’t surmount adver
sity. And alas, adversity hap
pens.
To my mind, the struggles
are what make life worth
living. Give me the cold-eyed
competitor who stays the
course without the flash.
Ignorance isn’t restrict
ed to the college football
field. Twice this season I’ve
watched high school play
ers start jacking their jaws,
and each time the player
concerned cost his team 15
yards.
Coaches say their players
are just being aggressive. I
say that any action by a
player that hurts his team
tells me two things. First, he

won convincingly 25-12. The
fatigue of the long day was
showing on the Eagles in the
third game, which Perry took
25-15. Northside unfortu
nately had to leave its rival’s
gym with an 0-4 record. After
preliminary-round losses to
Houston County and Perry,
the Eagles took on Warner
Robins, which was coming
off a loss to the Bears.
Shadden had three aces
early in the first game and
isn’t a team player. Second,
he really isn’t a team player.
His ego is too important.
I believe there’s a correla
tion between these overly
inflated egos and student
violence. Five Duquesne

All of this stems from one
simple thing, you attack my

Football players who taunt
can be placed in either cate
gory—the bully or the assail
ant. Either way, they are
people with either low self
esteem or have over-inflated
egos. Their behavior on the
field is a reflection of their
behavior off it.

Morgan Hollers (7) attempts a kill against a Warner Robins player.
I believe in playing to win.
I don’t trust players who feel
the need to prove themselves
but bullying in taunting.
Somebody always comes
along who is bigger and
tougher. So they have to
escalate to protect their
fragile self-image.
Such players are more con
cerned with individual stats
that mean nothing when
they’re playing on losing
teams.
Undisciplined teams lose
regardless of the score.
