Special to the Journal
In early June each year,
with the summer loom
ing before them, most high
school students are savoring
the opportunity to sleep late
or go on vacation with their
families.
Some young people, how
ever, jump right into activi
ties and opportunities that
allow them to continue their
education in a slightly dif
ferent way than the tradi
tional classroom offers. This
year Hannah Griggers, now
a senior at Peach County
High School, has just such
an opportunity.
Hannah was selected by
the Centerville Rotary Club
as its 2006 Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards recipi
ent. 62 students repre
senting 30 Rotary Clubs
in Georgia District 6920
attended this year’s RYLA
program, a four-day event
held June 8-11, at South
Georgia College in Douglas.
As a “RYLArian,” Hannah
participated in eight classes
and three banquets. Class
topics included ethics, per
sonality styles, communica
tion styles, and global issues.
The keynote address was

al Rita Suiter of Valdosta,
Georgia.
RYLA began in Southeast
Asia in the 1970 s and spread
rapidly around the world.
Georgia Rotary District
6920 adopted the program in
1989, initially inviting stu
dents from all three Georgia
Rotary Districts.
The program grew so fast
that it had to be scaled down
to include students from
Georgia 6920 only. RYLA
is designed for high school
juniors and seniors, although
some districts include other
age groups.
Those chosen to attend
the all-expense paid seminar
have a unique opportunity
to discuss leadership skills,
attend leadership classes,
and practice leadership skills
with state and national busi
ness leaders in a small, per
sonalized environment.
The Centerville Rotary
Club is proud to have spon
sored Griggers as it’s 2006
RYLA scholarship recipient.
