♦ THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2006 2B DEMONS From page iB everywhere (on defense). The defensive front is all No. 30s, so you know they can run. “They don’t have any big guys who play up front, but they rely on penetration in trying to disrupt the offense. We have to do a good job of being fundamentally sound, not allow any penetration and get off the ball.” Even considering how good Warner Robins’ opponents have been, it seems unthink able that the Demons offense has not produced any points for two games in a row. Central Gwinnett, which sits in a sound region (8-AAAAA) with Parkview and Brookwood, completely blanked Warner Robins on its home turf last Friday 17-0. “We didn’t play funda mentally sound enough to beat a good team,” said Way. “There was nothing wrong with design or what we had going in. We just didn’t exe cute very intelligently on either side of the ball. If you don’t play well against good teams, you aren’t going to win. “It wasn’t from a lack of effort on our kids’ part. I thought we battled and played hard. We just made way too many fundamen BEARS From page iB last year, pretty easy. They looked like they corrected a lot of things. They have a lot of good things going for them with us coming into town. It’s going to be a hard-fought battle.” For Parkview, the game with Warner Robins was its first without a running back named Caleb King, ranked No. 3 at his position nation ally by Scout.com. Johnson’s said King’s transfer had to disrupt the Panthers’ plan ning at the start. “When you play that first ball game, you go in think ing one thing and come out thinking something else,” said Johnson. “For Parkview, I think they realized they needed to make some chang es.” For example, the coach said a split end/comerback was moved to running back and put in a new fullback. He said this new tailback adds a speed factor to the rush ing game that was lacking on Sept. 2. There were also two changes on the offensive line and two in the defensive lineup. “They didn’t play too bad on defense,” said Johnson. “They gave up the big play, the reverse for a touchdown and they had a broken cover age deal that Warner Robins got a long touchdown off of. But they made it tough for them to drive the football. They are big and strong, and it’s going to be tough to run the football on them. “We need our offensive fine to do a good job, block them some. We need to give Eric (O’Neal) and them some room to run. Our receivers are catching the ball pretty well. That’s what we’ve been concentrating on the last couple of days.” Sometimes, just pulling out the chalkboard and reminding players what blocking and tackling means is the solution. Sometimes, it’s making adjustments on who plays what position. Way said they are looking at some changes in order to find 22 starters who will get the job done. “Not to name any names, but we are looking at some different people at differ ent positions trying to find the right combination,” he said. The Demon defense is doing its part, giving up just the 17 points to the Knights. Way said it was a good game on that side for 3 and a half quarters until the last five minutes. “We missed a fourth-down opportunity on the 30-yard line, and that kind of took the wind out of our sails,” said Way. “They scored 10 points in the last five min utes. Up until that time, I thought we played pretty well on defense.” There’s still a watch on Demon senior quar terback Mark Wright Jr. He appeared to haved re injured the same knee that kept him out of the 2005 season when Warner Robins "When you play that first ball game, you go in thinking one thing and come out thinking something else." - Houston County headfootball coach Doug Johnson We need to stay balanced on offense and get some points. I think it’s going to be a low scoring game unless there are some turnovers involved. “Defensively, we have to limit them on the run. Against Union Grove they did throw some, but they got ahead. In the first drive they went 80 yards for a touch down, then they were able to play their game, more of a power run. They put you in a position where you have to do something you don’t want to do.” Houston County so far has been a good run-stop ping defense with its defen sive line and linebackers. Johnson said Parkview has a big offensive line that can knock anyone off the ball, and the running backs hit the holes hard. Friday will mark the sec ond start in a row at quar terback for Bears sophomore Jeff Thompson. Regular starter Martez King is still out with a sprained ankle, and Johnson is hoping he can get back in the flow next week when the Region 1- AAAAA season begins. Johnson said Thompson did a good job organizing things with the offensive huddle and calling plays at the line when Houston beat Berkmar at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. He only threw the football five times with three comple tions, and Johnson said there were few “busted” plays. But no up-and-coming foot Lawton, who is in sixth with a record of 10-8, Dave McKim, who resides in sev enth at 9-4, Jerome Kennedy, lost to Northside on Sept. 8. Wright was able to practice the week leading up to the Central Gwinnett trip, but was 3-for-ll and had an interception. “He moved pretty good and threw the ball well,” said Way. “We have to do a better job of getting open and catching it. We protected him pretty well, and a majority of the time he threw the ball where it needed to be thrown. “We just have to run routes more precisely and catch the ball when we get close to it.” So from a health stand point Warner Robins looks to be in good shape going into Friday’s action. So the question then remains about how urgent the team is to get a victory and how angry and intense the 1-2 record makes them. “Nobody’s happy being 1-2,” said Way. “Which is a good thing. If they were content with it, we’d be in trouble. (Monday) was the best practice we’ve had all year without a doubt. It car ried over into (Tuesday). It’s not from a lack of work or preparation that we haven’t been successful the last two games. “We just played two good teams and didn’t play well. Our attitude is still good, and we’re still trying to get better.” ball player in Georgia hears anything about Berkmar. He hears plenty about Parkview. “There’ll be a little more pressure on him this week,” said Johnson. “I’m sure Parkview understands that. I’m sure their coaches will tell their kids, ‘We need to get after him.’ But I think Jeff can handle it.” In fact, this is not the first meeting between Houston County and Parkview, only the first in the regular sea son. Two years ago, the Bears and Panthers met in the state quarterfinal round with Parkview winning 20-10. Trailing 14-3, Houston had the football on the Panther 12-yard-line in the fourth quarter but lost a fumble. Lowndes would beat the Panthers in the 5A champi onship tilt 17-14. “They had a lot of good players,” said Johnson. “They had a defensive end who’s over at Auburn, a big offensive tackle who signed somewhere, a tight end who signed somewhere ... I think one of them went to Virginia Tech. They had two DBs who signed. “I don’t know if they are as strong as that team (this year). When you come within three points of winning it all ... I think they were 14-1 and Lowndes was 15-0. This team can get better and has gotten better in three weeks. They’re probably chomping at the bit for us to get in there.” who is eighth at 6-9, John Rackley, who is ninth at 5.5- 6.5 and Chuck Poole, who is 5-10.5.
