Bears down Parkview
By JAMES TIDWELL
Journal Staff Writer
For the second time in
the young football season, a
county squad found itself on
opposing sidelines from state
power Parkview as Housfon
County traveled north to
face the Panthers.
The Bears were hoping to
return home with a clean
county sweep over Parkview,
after Warner Robins crushed
the Panthers 30-3 in the
Demons’ season opener at
the Georgia Dome.
But after jumping ahead
by 10 points, it looked like
Parkview would have no
problem winning its home
opener.
The Bears had other ideas,
however, as they stormed
back with 20 unanswered
points for a 20-10 victory in
the Big Orange Jungle.
Houston County improves
to 3-1, while the Panthers
drop to 1-2.
Bears running back D.J.
Dobson powered the offense
as the senior rushed for
150 yards in the first half
and senior running back
Eric O’Neal added a pair of
touchdowns.
Houston County put the
game out of reach in the
fourth quarter as O’Neal
scored on a 3-yard run with
4:18 remaining in the game
for a 20-10 advantage. The
Bears offense moved the ball
80 yards on the scoring drive
as they ate up nearly nine
and a half minutes off the

Northside rolled into
Jones County and walked
away with an easy 45-0
shutout victory over the
Greyhounds.
Eagles quarterback
Marques Ivory led the
Northside offense with two
touchdown passes and one
touchdown run as Northside
remained undefeated at 4-0.
Ivory finished 8-of-ll pass
ing for 140 yards. Northside
backup quarterback Joe
Scott was able to move the
ball with ease as well as he
completed 6-7 passes for 93
yards and one touchdown.
Nick Bass caught a pair
of touchdown passes and
Tracey Lawrence caught the
final Eagles score.
As potent as the Northside
offense proved to be, the
defense proved even more
effective as the Eagles held
Jones County to 67 total
yards, including -nine rush
ing yards on 20 attempts.
Northside finished with
400 total yards, including
177 rushing yards on 33 car
ries.
The Greyhounds were also
hampered by 12 penalties
for 94 yards.

Scott’s offense was at its
strongest as the game moved
on, driving 10 plays with
three first downs. Perry saw,
Jackson succeed more times
than once on fourth down in
the first half, so, with 4th
and-4 from the 24, it was the
home club’s turn to go for
it. Fullback Brandon Golden
had eight yards in him to
keep a touchdown in sights.
On second and long,
Hayward completed a throw
to Akeen Felder on the 8.
From there Davis blasted off
left tackle for his first touch
down. Golden carried off
right guard to tie the game
21-21 at 6:57 remaining.
Jackson was more about
the big play, and with a kick
off return to the Perry 49, the
Red Devils needed just three
snaps to reclaim the lead.
Quarterback Brad Lunsford,
without his big-time receiv
er John Keye, completed a
pass in the middle to the 35.
Lamarcus Strickland, owner
of one touchdown already,
sped to the right corner and
hauled in No. 2 at the 5:36
mark.

Houston County defensive
back Dedrick Early inter
cepted the ball with ball
with less than 25 seconds
left in the game to seal the
victory.
The Bears went ahead for
good at 13-10 in the third
quarter as O’Neal scored
on a 17-yard run. Houston
County kicker Taylor Jones
failed on the PAT and the
Bears were unable to extend
the lead to four.
Trailing 10-0, Houston
County scored with 33 sec
onds left in the first half
as sophomore quarterback
Jeff Thompson found Ricky
Williams in the end zone
for an eight-yard touchdown
pass, capping a two play, 74-
yard drive. The score was
set up by a 66-yard run by
Dobson.
After a scoreless first
quarter, Parkview struck
quickly in the second quar
ter as Panthers sophomore
quarterback Clayton Wilkin
connected with sophomore
running back Brandon
Jacobs on a 29-yard touch
down pass with 11:53 left
before the half for a 7-0 lead.
The Bears set up the score
after a bad snap on a punt
gave Parkview the ball at
the Houston County 31.
Parkview added to the
advantage with 6:44 remain
ing in the quarter as Panthers
place kicker Patrick Kenny
connected on a 24-yard field
goal for a 10-0 edge.
on the board with a 25-yard
field goal with 9:01 left in
the first quarter. Deonte
Jordan put the Eagles ahead
10-0 on a one-yard run with
4:41 remaining in the first
quarter.
Ivory connect with Nick
Bass on a 31-yard touchdown
pass with 9:15 left in the sec
ond quarter for a 17-0 lead.
Tijuan Green added a one
yard run with 4:41 remain
ing in the quarter for a 24-0
Eagles advantage. Ivory fin
ished out the first half scor
ing with a 21-yard run for a
31-0 halftime edge.
Ivory tossed his final
touchdown pass of the night
on a 21-yard pass to Bass
with 9:27 left in the third
quarter. Scott added the
final points of the night for
Northside with a 28-yard
pass to Lawrence with five
seconds remaining before
the fourth quarter.

Westfield, Brentwood play to tie
From staff reports
Well why not?
Westfield and Brentwood pretty
much mirrored each other in the
first half and in the second, maybe it
was only fitting the Hornets and War
Eagles ended in a 7-all tie Friday in
Sandersville.
Both offensively had little to show
for their efforts in the first 16 min-

the one. That capped off a drive that
started on around Brentwood’s 40.
After a couple of stands by Westfield’s
defense, it appeared that score would
hold up. The only problem was one of
those stands came following a Hornet
fumble on a punt.
Following that, Westfield fumbled
the ball again on its next possession.
