Georgia Tech secondary shuffle builds experience By ADAM VAN BRIMMER Morris News Service ATLANTA - Georgia Tech’s Jon Tenuta named six starters to his secondary in the preseason. No, the defensive coordi nator’s math wasn’t off. Six defensive backs would play enough snaps each game to be considered starters, he said, and he would adjust his lineup based on opponents and situations. “I just have to move guys around to keep experience up and to see, based on what opponents have on the field, how we have to match up against them,” Tenuta said. The most recent adjust ment is to start Jahi Word- Daniels at cornerback in Georgia Tech’s base defense. Tenuta made the switch for last Thursday’s win against Virginia, and Word-Daniels responded with an interception and three solo tackles. Word-Daniels opened the season playing corner in the Yellow Jackets’ passing defense, with Pat Clark, the starting corner in the base defense, sliding inside to nickelback. The Jackets played so much nickel five defensive backs, two linebackers, four defensive linemen - and dol lar - five defensive backs, three linebackers and three defensive linemen - in the first three games, Tenuta and head coach Chan Gailey decided to simplify things for Word-Daniels and Clark, both first-year starters. “We’ve kind of made that determination that Pat is going to be the nickel and Jahi is going to be the cor ner, and instead of switching them and putting pressure on them mentally, just let them learn one spot,” Gailey said. This season is proving to be a crash course for both cor ners. Opponents have been reluctant to throw in veteran corner Kenny Scott’s direc tion and instead focus on the other side of the field. Word-Daniels leads the team with six pass break ups while Clark has made 14 tackles, tied for fifth most on the team. “I know I have a much big ger job to do knowing that they’re most likely going to pick on me being a young guy,” Word-Daniels said. “I have to pay a lot more atten tion to what I’m doing and the small details It puts pres sure on me, but it keeps me on my toes.” The situation has not resulted in hurt feelings among the defensive backs, Word-Daniels said. They bought into Tenuta’s “six starters” outlook in the pre season.
