Mark Taylor picked up the endorse ment Wednesday of one of the state’s largest teachers groups, despite an effort by Gov. Sonny Perdue to woo educators this election year. The 40,000-member Georgia Association of Educators praised Taylor’s work on the HOPE schol arship and pre-kindergarten as well as his consistent sup port for lowering class sizes and opposition to education funding cuts. The GAE “strongly feels that Mark Taylor will con tinue his staunch support for public schools, chil dren and public education employees,” the group said in a statement. The GAE also endorsed Democrat Jim Martin in the race for lieutenant governor and incumbent state schools Superintendent Kathy Cox, a Republican. Perdue has made an aggressive effort this year to court teachers, who are widely credited with helping him upset Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes in 2002. Perdue pushed through a raise for teachers and handed them SIOO gift cards to help buy back-to-school supplies for their classrooms. He also introduced legis lation to lower class sizes in elementary and middle schools. There was no immediate comment from the Taylor or Perdue campaigns on Wednesday. In endorsing Martin over Republican state Sen. Casey Cagle in the race for the No. 2 spot, the GAE pointed to Martin’s strong pro-educa tion record over 18 years in the state Legislature. The GAE praised Cox for her work to rework the state’s curriculum and the implementation of the fed eral “No Child Left Behind” laws. YOUR WEATHER TEAM! Police Chief Richard Pennington announced the drop Tuesday at the police department’s annual “Crime Is Toast” awards breakfast. Homicides and rapes led the decline, Pennington said, continuing a trend of falling violent crime rates in recent years. Killings dropped 21 per cent last year, from 112 to 90. Rapes were down 16 per cent, according to Atlanta Police Department statistics supplied to the FBI. Aggravated assaults were down 9 percent, and rob beries and larcenies dropped 8 percent. Burglaries, how ever, had only gone down 1 percent. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin said she would lobby the City Council for continued financial support of police, whose starting sal ary is about $37,000. “There’s no question, we need to raise salaries, and we need a new police head quarters,” Franklin said. Perdue proposes Georgia tax breaks for biofuel producers By SHANNON McCaffrey Associated Press Writer ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Sonny Perdue announced a tax incentive on Tuesday designed to lure biofuel manufacturers to Georgia and tap the state’s crops for the growing alternative fuels market. , Perdue said he wants to exempt materials and equip ment used to build biofuel facilities from the 4 per cent state sales tax. The tax break would be available to facilities processing ethanol, biodiesel and other fuels made from Georgia-grown products. Perdue made the announcement at the site set to house Bull Dog BioDiesel’s new facility in Ellenwood. “It is vitally important that we decrease our depen dence on foreign oil,” Perdue said. “New alternative fuel production facilities are proving that with leadership and innovation this can be done.” The tax incentive is expect ed to cost between $2 million to $4 million a year. Perdue unveiled the alter native fuels incentive as the state’s top environmental officials launched a five-city tour to seek input on the state’s energy plan. Some environmentalists had criti cized the plan for not doing more to encourage the devel Aged Hand-cut Steaks . Georgia crops like peanuts, cottonseed oil and corn could become tomorrow’s gasoline if the biofuels industry takes off as expected. In addi tion, the state’s struggling timber industry could see a boost. New technology is being developed to convert pine cellulose from wood into ethanol. About 25 mil lion of Georgia’s 37 million acres are covered in forest, so the boon for the state could be substantial.,Perdue is seeking re-election in November. A spokesman for his Democratic rival, Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor, said Perdue had four years to push an alternative fuels plan, yet had waited for an election year news conference. “Mark Taylor believes that alternative fuels are a great idea for Georgia’s consum ers and for our economy, but unlike Sonny, Mark Taylor will get it done,” Rick Dent said. Bull Dog BioDiesel pro duces fuel from animal fats, cooking waste oil and soybean oil. The company is constructing a plant in Ellenwood that’s expected to employ 15 people.
