punting unit on the field.
Thompson, Houston’s
starting quarterback the
last two games, split time
on Friday with the return
ing Martez King. He got the
call from head coach Doug
Johnson for what would be
a nine-play drive starting on
the Bear 41. Thompson com
pleted third-down passes to
Collins with 53 seconds left
and Craig Presley with 24
ticks to go.
Brian Buford got the
Demon defense a sack for
third down with 8 seconds
left. The next play saw
Thompson get his one last
heave off, and Collins snuck
in to secure it while on the
ground.
“I lost about five years,”
said Warner Robins defen
sive coordinator David Bruce
about that last drive’s effect
on his life expectancy. “I can’t
get that mad about the last
play. We tried to bat it down,
and I give (Collins) credit. He
was in the right place at the
right time.
“I don’t know, I guess miss
ing that extra point, the foot
ball gods had to make up
for that. We dodged a bullet
there.
“I’m very proud of our
defense. Those kids played
so hard for so long.”
Bruce said he expected a
defensive struggle, and he
was equally full of praise for
the Houston County defense.
He said this game showed
that Warner Robins can still
play hard-nosed defense.
The defensive struggle to
come was evident in the first
half with a slew of punts, a
quarterback sack here and
there and, most importantly,
key forced turnovers.
Warner Robins only gained
two first downs on offense,
but would be the only team
to reach the end zone ... but
it wasn’t on offense.
The first quarter started
and ended scoreless, but
the Demons had a scoring
drive, in its sights thanks to
a big Houston County mis
take. Laron Scott recovered

Then, they changed their
minds called a timeout and
came back out in punt for
mation. Then Perry called
a timeout. Following that,
Henry County decided it
“would” go for it. It made
it and subsequently drove
down the field - aided by
a couple of medium-to-long
passes - and scored. That cut
it to 13-9 with just over 10
seconds to go.
Perry, however, came out
and scored to start the sec
ond half. That drive was
aided by a roughing the
passer call and the passer
- Hayward - perhaps tak
ing offense later made the
War Hawks pay. He raced 35
yards for a touchdown.
Henry County later missed
a short field goal attempt
before scoring again with
about 30 seconds left to play.
It also made the 2-point con
version to cut the lead to
20-17.
The War Hawks’ attempt

a fumbled punt return on the
Bears 26 yard-line.
Kyle Griffin and Princeton
Dean of Houston converged
on Demon quarterback Mark
Wright Jr. for a second-down
sack. But a foul for unsports
manlike conduct wiped out
the lost yards. Warner Robins
had third down from the 20,
but the Bear defense deliv
ered again stripping the foot
ball out of the Demon run
ning back’s hands. Dedrick
Early made the recovery on
the 25.
Demon defensive back
Ryan Reid covered a second
down pass to the tight end
to force Houston County to
punt away. The Bear defense
also deflected a pass and
got the football back for its
offense with a punt.
The name of Jordan
Sanders, Demon junior defen
sive end, was heard numer
ous times, starting with a
third-down sack on the final
play of the first period.
His biggest impact occurred
on a 2nd-and-13 for the
Houston offense on the Bear
19. Coming out of a Houston
timeout, he batted a pass
high in the air. Ivory Petties,
a fellow lineman, came down
with it and had just a 10-yard
jaunt to the end zone. David
Clark kicked the PAT for the
7-0 score at 8:05 of the sec
ond quarter.
Darious Lane kept Houston
County in poor field posi
tion by covering the ensuing
kickoff on the Bear 15. Brian
Lawson and Justin Cowart
stuffed the Bear running
game for a three-and-out, but
the Houston defense, taking
the field for the first time
behind in the score, didn’t
slow down at all.
Antwan Hamilton was able
to outrun two defenders to
the sideline for a rare first
down by the Demons. Dean
and Dexter Holman shared
another sack on second
down.
Eric O’Neal earned
Houston’s third first-down
of the half on a sweep, but it
was Josh Palmer’s consecu
tive stops on the line that
kept the Bears at bay and
ended the half.
Griffin had at least five

tackles and Dean four in the
first half. Prewett had a key
stop on a third-down pass in
the flat, and Anthony Harris
led a couple important tack
les at the line.
Field position was not on
Houston County’s side for
most of the second half. The
Bears started drives on its
21, 12 and 10 in the third
quarter..
King, running plays out of
the shotgun, had two shuffle
completions to O’Neal that
advanced the ball to the
Demon 30. On third down,
Palmer read King’s bootleg,
then Lawson put up a wall
on DJ Dodson that earned
Warner Robins possession on
downs.
Hamilton and Jackson
ripped off two runs, and the
Demons were again smelling
points sitting on the Houston
37. But Josh Nelson pulled
down Jackson behind the
line and Early read the inside
reverse on third down.
Warner Robins’ first drive
of a hectic fourth quarter
started on its 47, another
product of the field position
battle. The Demons convert
ed two third downs, includ
ing a 3rd-and-15 after Dean’s
sack. Jeremy Grant took

slipped on a third down carry.
Clark took the field for his
longest field goal try ever, a
41-yarder from the left hash.
It went in good at 6:41 for a
10-0 Warner Robins edge.
“Awesome. Amazing,” said
Clark about his successful
boot. “I thought I almost
missed it at the beginning.
It started going out wide, but

first and only tote count for a
seven-yard blast to the 22.
The Bears were in field
goal range, but things got
a little hairy when Sanders
pulled down O’Neal sifter a
catch in the flat for eight lost
yards on third down. Jones
got the call anyway for a 45-
yard attempt, and he got the
Bears on the board.
