Hospitals continuing
postpartum home visits

A nurse will continue
doing follow up home visits
for new mothers and new
borns sent home early.
The Hospital Authority of
Houston County has renewed
a three-year agreement with
the Houston County Health
Department to provide for
follow-up home visits for
mothers and children dis
charged early after the birth
of a child.
Houston Healthcare has
provided the RN Postpartum
Home Visit Program for
patients following deliv
ery at the Houston Medical
Center’s Women’s Center
and previously at Perry
Hospital for about 15 years.
In 2003, due to new require
ments for a home health
agency for home visit pro
viders, Houston Healthcare
began providing the service
through a cooperative agree
ment with the county Health
Department.
Mothers and newborns
discharged from the hospital
before 48 hours for normal
births and before 96 hours
for cesarean section deliv
eries, by state law qualify
for two follow up visits. The
state requires a minimum
time of inpatient care for
mothers and newborns of
48 hours for regular births
and 96 hours for cesarean
deliveries.
As part of the agreement,
the hospital will provide one

cle to be used exclusively for
those visits.
The Health Department,
according to the agreement,
has to provide the visits to
all Medicaid postpartum
patients from Houston
Medical Center and Perry
Hospital, and provide the
home visits for all early dis
charge and high-risk post
partum patients regardless
of insurance class, residing
in Houston and surrounding
counties when initial and fol
low-up visits are ordered by
the attending physician fol
lowing discharge from HMC
or Perry Hospital.
The health department
also has to maintain all
patient records, supervise

Jane Kinnas, of Houston
Healthcare Marketing and
Community Relations, the
obstetricians and pediatri
cians at both hospitals have
been in full support of the
program.
It has been a benefit to
postpartum mothers and
newborns in identifying
health problems early and
reducing infant mortal
ity and maternal and infant
morbidity.
She also noted births at
Houston Medical Center
were up 13 percent in August
from July and up 13.4 per
cent for the fiscal year com
pared the previous year.

contract for Robins AFB

announced last week it had
won a four-year, firm-fixed
price contract valued at $45
million to support the 330th
Aircraft Sustainment Wing
at Robins Air Force Base.
The SAIC-led team will
provide services for the
wing’s aircraft, including
center wing replacement,
depot inspection and repair,
aircraft modification, and
contractor logistics sup
port, allowing them to
deliver five C-130E aircraft
to Poland’s Air Force.
