The big Panther inning,
with a lot of big hits, was the
bottom of the third. Perry
sent 11 batters to the plate
to score seven times.
With a 4-0 lead, and Marla
Patterson and Jessica Wright
on base with hits, Thompson
ripped a two-run single. Clay
drew a walk with two outs
to bring the top of the order
up. Ashley Craddock found a
hole in the outfield for a two
run triple, and she scored on
a throwing error to make it
9-0.
Thompson, the catcher,
had a total of three runs
batted in. Her third came in
the home fourth for the 10th
and final run Perry would
need.
• According to Sans, Perry
has some scheduling issues
the rest of this week and
next week with the Region 4-
AAA tournament set to begin
on Oct. 10. The Panthers
did not play a make-up at
Northeast-Macon on Tuesday
due to a funeral involving
the Northeast school.
Sans said Northeast
asked to play that game on
Thursday. However, pending
a Peach County result with
Southwest-Macon, Sans said
Perry and Peach are likely
needing to play a tiebreaker
for second place in the sub
region if each finishes with
the same record. Sans said
by the region by-laws tie
breakers need to be played
on Thursday, but considering
the circumstances it could be
played on Friday or Monday.
The coach added the game
would be played on a neutral
site. Perry and Peach split
the two sub-region contests.

Class AAAA championship game.
Even though the Demons won,
the reviews for the high school
venue over there were less than
mediocre.

Statesboro for the AAAA title. The
fact that Statesboro, as its region
winner, was on the side of the
home-field designation for a sec
ond year in a row was enough
to miff Eagle head coach Conrad
Nix.
I have it on good authority that
the GHSA head, Dr. Swearngin,
said without any hesitation that
the game would not be held at
Statesboro High. They were
able to secure Georgia Southern
University’s Paulson Stadium, a
fine facility for sure, and we all
remember how the game turned
out.
What comes up over and over
again in this explanation is “GHSA
standards.” The association’s main
concerns are seating - and it’s been
made clear before that temporary
is not permanent - and the press
box. I can testify that lots of media
types attend state championship
games. What meets our standards
are plenty of plugs and phone lines

(By the way, if you ever see our
cameraman, Gary, ask him about
his Statesboro experience. I’ll just
say that a good time was not had
by all.)
One place where there is no
concern over inadequacies is the
Georgia Dome. At least when it’s
that big high school semifinal
weekend. I haven’t been there for a
Super Bowl or SEC Championship,
when I imagine triple the amount
of people are squeezing into that
press area.
But for high school ball, that
big place will never fill to capacity.
There is something spine-tingling
about the sound of a roar when
something big happens in a full
stadium with the lights on and a
nip in the air. The GHSA isn’t try
ing to take that away.
It’s just saying that a first-class
event deserves a first-class set
ting.
