Friday such mm John Dooro 250, c*nrmww\ 3 p.m., Saturday ► Tony Stewart has won two Cup championships one spon sored by Winston, the other by Nextel but he won his first Soap Box Derby in Kansas. Soap Box Derby? Well, it's unof ficial. but the first two finishers, Stewart and Casey Mears, did coast across the finish line. ► Experience paid off in the Ban quet 400. The drivers who fin ished third, fourth and fifth were, in order, 47-year-old Mark Martin. 49-year-old Dale Jarrett and 39-year-old Jeff Burton. * Anyone can win the Chase, thanks to the format, but Burton has built a 69-point lead three races into it. Only four drivers Denny Hamlin, Martin. Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick are within 100 points. ► Kasey Kahne, so strong this year on "intermediate tracks," is unlikely to be able to take ad vantage of that strength since he now trails Burton by 273 points. ► Kansas should've marked the beginning of Jimmie Johnson’s valiant comeback. He led 105 laps, yet it all blew up in his face in the final five. Part of it was his fault a pit-road speeding ticket but some of it was just fate. ► The driver left pondering what might have been was sixth-place finisher Carl Edwards. Like Stew art. Edwards had little to lose by gambling on fuel, but unlike Stewart, he didn't give it a try. ► A bizarre Kansas race left the standings scrambled six of the top 10 positions changed and change is iikely to be the norm again. The next race. Tal ladega, figures to be the Chase's most volatile. Rest as sured that the drivers at the top are dreading the UAW-Ford 500. ► Stewart's average speed at Kansas was 121.753 mph. He wasn't going half that fast when he crossed the finish line ... and it wasn't under caution. ► An almost alarming number of 400-mile races at 1.5-mile tracks are seemingly being de cided by fuel mileage. WHO HOT AND WHO'S NOT ' ' ► Who's hot Points leader Jeff Burton has finished in the top 10 in four straight races.... Mark Martin has im proved from Burton 10th to third in points in a span of five races. ► Who’s not Jeff Gordon has finished outside the top 30 in two of the past four races. ... Kasey Kahne's last three finishes are 16th. 38th and 33rd. 11fi n PROMT! IIOU NOTICES without a hearing. WITNESS THE HONORABLE JANICE D. SPIRES By: Michelle L. Newman, like teammate and former champion Kurt Busch, failed to make the Chase for the Nextel Cup for the first time this year. His most recent victory, in New Hampshire on Sept. 18,2005, was 38 races ago. He’s 17 th in the points standings. “The emotional feeling is obviously, I won’t say depression, but sometimes disgust, sometimes frustration, some times a little bit just frustrated and upset,” he said. “The bottom line is I know we had a rough offseason at Penske Racing. “This is not an excuse, but you asked for a reason. Matt (Borland, his crew chief) and a lot of people at the shop had been so in-depth in meetings and things like that to make the car go fast that we haven’t been able to put a lot of emphasis and focus on making the Alltel Dodge go around in a circle real quick. I think that’s part of it. I think we’re playing catch-up with a few things, technology-wise, and I see that getting better over time, obvious ly. Our struggle in race trim has put more emphasis on us ‘doing race trim’ in practice, which we’ve got a lot of criticism for, whether it was deserved or not. We’re definitely to a point where we're struggling now.” The emphasis on race performance has, in turn, affected Newman’s quali fying, which, until recently, was a no table strength. Newman has won 37 poles in 181 races, but he has only two this year. The next race, at Talladega Super speedway, doesn’t appear particularly promising. Newman, from South Bend, Ind., finished 33 rd in the cir cuit’s earlier visit to the restrictor plate track. Though he hasn’t fared particularly well at such venues, it’s pertinent to note that Newman did fin- 116(1 PROMTE 11011 NOTICES NOTICE HOUSTON COUNTY PROBATE COURT The petition of Patricia A. The 27th victory of Stewart’s career wasn't one he particularly cherished, but it was unlike any other. The 35-year-old is noted for his brilliance behind the wheel. Victories based on strategy have, by his own admission, been uncommon. "It's hard." he admit ted, "to be disciplined." Not the least of Johnson’s problems was a penalty for speeding exiting pit road on the 263rd lap. “I’ll have to go and see where that was,” said Johnson. “I definitely don't feel I was speeding on pit road, but the computer doesn’t lie ...” NASCAR This Week's Monte Dutton gives his take: 'Twenty-nine penalties were issued during the Banquet 400, and five went to cham pionship contenders. Rookie Denny Hamlin was twice penalized for pit road violations. By far, Johnson's in fraction was the most costly.” .EOENPS AND LORE Bouchard pulled historic upset win at Talladega One of many notable Talladega upsets occurred on Aug. 2,1981, when Ron Bouchard won the only major NASCAR race of his career. Bouchard, driving for Jack Beebe, took advantage of the fact that Dar rell Waltrip, Terry Labonte and Harry Gant were occupied with one anoth er. Bouchard, from Fitchburg, Mass., astonishingly swooped by all three on the final lap. The top seven finish ers all drove Buicks. «=/VIM TIPS Ever wonder how much money these guys make? The average salary for a Nextel Cup driver in 2004 was between $1.5 million and $2 million, but some of the series' top drivers make as much as three times that. But where they can rake in the cash is by performing well on the track a NASCAR report in 2004 stated that drivers can take home 30 to 50 per cent of their race winnings each week. For example, Tony Stewart earned $346,361 for winning in Kansas last week. He might pocket around $150,000 of that total. Those kind of figures really add up. Jimmie Johnson has earned more than $7.4 million this year in win nings, meaning he's probably taking in around $3.5 million in addition to his considerable salary. You can add to all of this appearance fees, spon sor bonuses and any number of side projects, and it’s easy to see how the top drivers are among the most high ly compensated athletes in the world. ing thereto required by the O.C.G.A. §lO-1-490, has been filed with the Clerk of the Superior Court of Hous ton County, Georgia.
