HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Student attends Oxford classes Special to the Journal Warner Robins High School Honors student, Ryan Prior, recently attended Creative Writing and Philosophy classes in Oxford, England. During his stay, he had 80 hours of class time, and completed short writ ing exercises. He also had his story “Black Cabs and Scarlet Roses” published in “The Visitor” literary mag azine as well as his poem “Soaring” published in The Piper Punt 2006. He attended presenta tions by guest lecturers Professor James Basker of Barnard College and Columbia University and Don Winslow (author and screenwriter). During his visit, Prior walked along the cobble stones where many writ ers have frequented Oxford establishments. Classroom fieldtrips included Broughton Castle, Warick Castle and the Roval Shakespeare Theater in Stratford where artists per formed Romeo and Juliet. Houston Healthcare holds luncheon Special to the Journal More than 700 people, including approximately 200 breast cancer survivors, attended the 11th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon hosted by Houston Healthcare and the Robins Air Force Base Health and Wellness Center Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Museum of Aviation’s Century of Flight Hangar. The guest speaker for this year’s event was Dave Balch, author of Cancer for Two: An Inspiring True Story and Guide for Cancer Patients and Their Partners. In addition to the guest speaker, the luncheon includ ed a fashion show featuring casual attire and evening wear provided by Belk’s and Evelyn’s and modeled by breast cancer survivors. The luncheon was spon sored by Houston Healthcare, RAFB Health and Wellness Center, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Ziesenhene nominated for Senate youth program Special to the Journal The Houston County School System has nominated Warner Robins High senior Jenna Ziesenhene to repre sent the system at the 2006- 2007 United States Senate Youth Program, the Board of Education announced in a release this past week. One stu dent from each of Georgia’s congressio nal districts will be cho sen to inter view at the state level, from which ZIESENHENE two state delegates and two alternates will be determined. Ziesenhene’s application and USSYP examination will be reviewed along with others from her congressional dis trict. One student from the district will be chosen to interview in Atlanta. “Jenna is a superior and com mitted student,” said Pamela Stanescu, Ziesenhene’s social studies teacher, who nominated her to represent Warner Robins High at the district level. “She is highly articulate, both in speaking and writing, and she has a passion for righteousness that molds her interactions with the world. “Jenna was selected for RmHB Submitted Ryan Prior, center, had the opportunity of meeting American novelist Don Winslow, whose most recent novel is an upcoming movie starring Robert de Niro, and Dr. James Basker, founder and director of the WRHS student studies in England The dormitory he stayed in at Pembroke College was located across the street from Christ Church. She is willing to act when justice demands.” The USSYR sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, will be held in Washington D.C., March 3- 10, 2007. Two high school student leaders from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity will spend the week, according to the release, “broadening their knowledge and under standing of Congress and the legislative process.” All expenses are covered by the Hearst Foundation and each delegate will receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Ziesenhene is the daughter of Greg and Debbie Ziesenhene of Warner Robins. She is currently president of Science Club, historian for BETA Club and a member of Jr. Civitan and Student Council. She is also a mem ber of the The Telegraph’s Teen Board and serves as Associate Editor. Also according to the release, “Her participation on the Teen Board helps Jenna stay informed on cur rent issues and allows her to express her passion for jus tice and worthy causes.” losophy of religion and aes thetics. He also wrote about his experience in an article entitled, “Refuge” which he wrote for an AP Language class assignment this fall. It is imperative that we, as career, technical, and agricultural educators, showcase our programs to our legislatures so that we will stand a better chance of winning the funding competitions at the state and federal levels.
