Lady Bears shut out Coffee
By MiTTHEW BROWN

For its part, Coffee County

catches and

the Houston

Thursday.

the right catch and throw
that turned out good for the
home Bears. With a shutout
effort from pitcher Chelsea
Burroughs, Houston County
beat Coffee 3-0 to split
the regular-season series
between the two clubs.
The Bears improved to
9-1 in Region 1-AAAAA,
the only loss coming to the
Trojans in Douglas on Sept.
19. Houston County, which
has well secured a spot in
the Class AAAAA state sec
tional tournament, next
plays Warner Robins High
at home on Tuesday. The
Demonettes must get past a
pair of region games on the
road (Valdosta and Lowndes)
on Saturday to make that a
battle for first place.
Houston’s game on
Thursday was scoreless until
the bottom of the fourth
inning when the home team
scored an unearned run.

“(For us) it was pitching and goad
defense, because we sure didn't hit. We
have got to improve on our hitting."
- Houston County head softball coach Cristi Griffin
Burroughs used her own bat
to get a bigger cushion in the
sixth. Otherwise Houston
had only one other inning
with more than one baser
unner.
“They’ve come around,”
said coach Cristi Griffin on
Coffee’s effort. “They didn’t
win early, but lately they’ve
won a couple of games. They
beat us and they beat Tift
County.
“(For us) it was pitching
and good defense, because
we sure didn't hit. We have
got to improve on our hit
ting.”
Burroughs had nine
strikeouts in seven innings.
Coffee County had some bas
erunners with six hits and a
walk, but it was the Houston
infield defense that came up
big in keeping those runs off
the board.
Senior second baseman
Bethany Crenshaw had two
putouts and two assists in
the first two innings.
The Trojans loaded the
-bases in the top of the fourth
on a one-out walk, a two-out
single up the middle and
an infield hit that shortstop
Kourtney Thomas kept from
going to the outfield. The
next ball in play went to
Thomas, who got a strong
throw to Erica Vasquez at
first base t 6 end the frame.
Vasquez would get
Houston’s fourth going with
a hit, and Crenshaw followed
with a bunt single. With
one out Burroughs singled,
but the Trojans threw out
Vasquez at home.
Crenshaw was then occu
pying third base, and she
drew a throw from the catch
er that went to the outfield.
The Bears got the run, but
Coffee also ended the inning
with another outfield assist.
Crenshaw and Taylor
Fountain were on base with
two outs in the sixth when
a drive by Burroughs went
between the third baseman’s
legs. That gave the pitcher
two runs batted in and a 3-0
lead.
Coffee had two hits in the
top of the sixth, but third
baseman Kaitlyn Carriker
beat a runner to the bag for
a force-out wrapped around
two strikeouts. She also
made a tough assist in the
seventh on a bunt after the
Trojans led off with a hit.

Lady Panthers secure second seed
By MATTHEW BROWN

No need for a tiebreak

Region 4-AAA softball south
sub-region.
According to Perry
High coach Jeff Sans, the
Panthers are in second
place due to Peach County’s
loss this week to Southwest-
Macon. He had said earlier
in the week that if Perry
and Peach were tied for sec
ond, there would be a game
between the two schools to
determine the No. 2 seed
for the region tournament.

instead of a game, the tie
breaker would have been
run differential, which
would have favored Perry.
The Panthers secured
second place by beating
Northeast-Macon on the
road Thursday in what
Sans called an “ugly” game.
That made Perry 7-3 in 4-
AAA, 18-8 overall at the
end the regular season. The
Panthers are paired with
Jackson High of the north
sub-region in the region
tournament, which starts
Tuesday and is held at
Jackson High.
In order to advance to the
the competition. Only the
top 31 advanced.
First and foremost of
those was Michael Morrison
of Atlanta. He posted a five
under-par 67 to take medal
ist honors in the stroke-play
qualifying round.
The defending champion,
David Noll Jr. of Dalton,
was exempt from qualifying
and will be the number one
seed in match play.
