HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL ;^£«_ ENI/Gary Harmon Perry’s Michael Walker smothers a receiver. | jttm ** ’Sw jjH ENI Gary Harmon Perry defenders bring down a Central runner. DOMINATES From page itt The Chargers coughed up the football six times in the first half, but on only one occasion did Perry get the recovery. On the first Panther series, also the first drive of the game, the I formation emerged with Davis as the tailback and Brandon Golden at fullback. It lasted six plays and covered 73 yards. Davis has two carries on the option pitch, but it was on a stan dard hand-off from Hayward that he cleared 40 yards to the Central 1-yard-line. Davis was rewarded with another carry to score the touchdown less than two minutes into the action. Bill Freeman kicked the PAT for the 7-0 lead. Central fumbled two times on its first series, but got both back in order to penetrate over . the 50. Quarterback Javarus Mallard threw a deep completion to the Perry 16, but it was in the red zone that the Perry defense had the answers. Stephen Calhoun stopped the option at the line of scrimmage on first down, then Ambrose Kendrick charged threw the middle for a sack on second down. Mallard was still on the run, eluding two Panther rushers but not Kanorris Davis for another loss on the 25. The Chargers kept the offense on the field for fourth down, but Zetavius Cheatham slapped away the football at the last second. Perry’s offense came back with pure smash-mouth football with 11 running plays out of 12 on its next scoring drive. Hayward, Kenny Davis and Golden each earned a first down, but when the first quarter ended the Panthers had 3rd-and-9 on the Charger 37. Hayward started the second period taking a bootleg to his right, and with Golden laying a pancake-style lead block, the quarterback sprinted all the way to the 2. The Charger line blocked the PAT keeping the score 13-0. Using a fullback dive, Central once again got over the midfield stripe for first down. However, a backwards lateral backfired on the visi tors. The fumble problems finally caught up with the Chargers, and Tony Davis recovered on their 47. Later in the second quar ter, Tony Davis registered a sack on Mallard that had Central punting in its own end zone. Perry put on the pressure, and > the hurried kick sailed out of bounds on the 19. Two plays later, and a Central unsportsmanlike foul mixed in, Hayward did his option bootleg for an eight-yard touchdown at 3:07 remaining in the half. Kenny Davis carried in a two-point play to push the score to 21-0. Kanorris Davis, who ear lier actually forced one of Central’s fumbles, chased down Mallard for a second time putting Central in a long yardage situation. That ended Central’s last chance to score in the half. The third quarter wasn’t quite what a football pur ist would want to see : It started with a Perry kickoff that the Chargers returned to the Panther 43. On top of that was a late hit out of bounds called on the home team that spotted Central on the 28. And there was still a mat ter of Central’s fumbling tendencies. After Kanorris Davis stopped the first-down running play for a five-yard loss. Mallard completed a pass in the flat. But the reception was fumbled with Cheatam recovering on the 16. Perry gained nothing deep in this hole, and the punt return by Central went to the 24. Even though the Charger drive started on the 24, it ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass seven plays and two penalties later. On second down from the 6, Central went up the middle and again lost hold of the ball. There was a big pileup and a long process of getting everyone up, but Central not only kept possession but had first down on the 4. Two false starts put the Chargers on the 14, still with first down, then Walker led a swarming blitz to bring Mallard down on the 25. Mallard was shaken up on that play, so Central went with Quent Boone under center. He lofted a pass to Simmons in the end zone at 3:40 of the third quar ter. The PAT missed, so the score remained 21-6. Perry still couldn’t get its offense on the field after the kickoff. It was an onside kick, and there was some hard contact. But with no fair catch signal, Central had the football for another series at the Panther 40. Kenny Davis took a turn on the defensive side and had two stops for a loss. He sacked Mallard for 3rd-and -17 to start the fourth quar ter on the 37. The Panthers finally fielded on punt and drove from their 36. In a nine-play drive, Hayward ran for a first down to the Central 49 and hit Johnson in the flat on third down for a 10-yard gain at the 35. Akeen Felder caught a 12-yard completion near the sidelines at the 10. Hayward practically walked over the goal line from there at 5:58. Freeman knocked in the PAT for a 28- 6 lead. Central was facing a 3rd and-15 from its own 49 when Mallard let off a good throw. There was a crash of bod ies at the point of recep tion, and Walker came out with the ball and raced down the visiting sidelines for six. Freeman made it seven at 4:42. The Chargers added an Antione Moore touchdown run of nine yards at 2:03, driving 57 yards on seven plays. ■ Mclntosh County Acad. 21, Pierce Co. 0 ■ Norcross 34, S.
