Bulldogs lose Coutu for season By Marc Weiszer Morris News Service ATHENS - If Georgia is going to repeat as SEC champion, it will have to do so without All-SEC kicker Brandon Coutu. Coutu will miss the rest of the season after suffering a severely torn hamstring in his right leg in practice on Thursday. An MRI revealed the injury to his kicking leg, which occurred when the junior was trying a new onside kick technique in practice. “It’s an unfortunate and unusual injury, but my spir its are good,” Coutu said Friday. “My goal now is to begin the rehab process as quickly as possible and get ready for next year.” Coutu won’t need sur gery, but will be treated with a period of immobi lization, followed by reha bilitation, Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson said. “I feel sorry for Brandon, and we’ll miss him for sure; but it’s a reminder that injuries are a part of football,” coach Mark Richt said. “The good news is that it looks like a full recovery is expected, and we look forward to getting him back at full speed in time for next season.” Junior Andy Bailey, recruited on scholarship from Athens, Tenn., will take over on field goals and extra points begin ning tonight against No. 13 Tennessee. Walk-on Ben Wilson will continue to handle kickoffs. Bailey hasn’t attempted a field goal or extra point since the final regular season game in 2004. He won a preseason compe tition that season with Coutu and converted 14 of 20 field goals and 36 of 37 extra points before los ing the job to Coutu. Richt said Georgia is ■ 6-month CD 5.75 * 1 For your convenience, our bank’s lobby is open trom 9:00 a.m.- Noon each Saturday. 00039: 11 J CGSA weekend action “fortunate” to have Bailey able to replace Coutu. Bailey’s career long is 46 yards. “Even the first-year, it was just a dead-heat battle, and it was very difficult to decide, and we went with Andy,” Richt said. “At the end, we went with Brandon. We stuck with Brandon, but we kind of stopped the competition, too. If we had just competed again, and said it’s wide open, it would have been a tough call again.” Coutu is 7 of 8 on field goals this season and 15 of 15 on extra point attempts. He was a candidate for the Lou Groza Award for nation’s top kicker. He kicked a 55-yard field goal this year, tied for lon gest in the nation this sea son, and last season set the SEC record for longest field goal without a tee with a 58- yarder against Louisiana- iP:OAWyNrTO,WNfQCTieiANS;IHga IQweraOßiramesTo Choose From WtfflilmicllTliis Includes Metal iroliSlsticfriame With Single WlMfutl.inff Plastic lenses \WE ACCEPT MOST INSURANCE ASSIGNMENTS INCLUDING SPECTRA, SUPERIOR S CIGNA WBOS’lntemationi) Square • Warner Robins* fzJcM 922-2020 Iw’jyKl i3l Pio Mono Avenue • Maton * >C«*M^*i|.43lO ' i ßiiles an subject to change without notice. Monroe. Coutu’s injury occurred at the start of practice on Thursday, when Coutu worked on an onside kick technique that Richt said put his leg in a different position. “I think it was something that he saw in the NFL,” Richt said. “Somebody popped it up real high, and he was trying to do that in case we needed it. I noticed that ball. It popped way up. It was perfect.” Creat Deals Free AD for items under SSO Call 987-1823 for details * Turn Complete Pair St Eyeglasses $69” lcmma 5B W0J88Q2... Member FDtC
