6A SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2006 Death calls and a mother goes It was the third or fourth sip of coffee before the foulness filled the air and ruined the previously delicious aroma of caffeine doused heavily in cream. Suddenly, without warning, I smelled death in the air. Never can I explain how I smell it slightly or how the odor’s strength grows then quickly permeates my being, settling over me in gloom that can be close to unbearable. The smell of death when it comes is heavy and oppres sive. It hangs in the air like the weight-laden fog that often covers Los Angeles. At least to my nostrils, it is hard to inhale and absorb. It is not unlike stepping outdoors on a clear su m - Ronda Rich Columnist mer’s day, expecting to inhale fresh air, only to be hit by a heavy steam that suffocates rather than revives. Though I didn’t know who death would call that day, I felt strongly, sadly that it would be a moth er whose departure would leave wailing and mourning children behind. I tried to shake myself from the mor bid thought, telling myself that I was maudlin and sen timental because it was my own mother’s birthday. Yes, Mama and I have sparred sometimes comical ly, sometimes hatefully but we are always in agreement that we love each other madly and unconditionally. I blinked back the emo tion of tears, thinking how the death of a mot her would devastate any child in her half right mind. Debbie, my best friend, settled into the restaurant booth, shook the napkin open and as she placed it in her lap said, “They called Mike and his fam ily in the morning for his mama. They think the end is near.” Debbie is used to my pre monitions so she wasn’t surprised but did shrug. “But they’ve been called in a couple of times before, once four or five months ago. She’s always pulled through. She keeps hang ing on.” “Then, the kids need to go in, talk to her and tell her it’s okay for her to go. She needs to know that they'll be fine.” Mama Love had been sick for years, her health dwindling rapidly as her body, which had seen over 90 years of use, grew too tired to carry on. She had lost the use of her legs and, finally, her lifelong enthusiastic ardor for the Atlanta Braves. That was, all agreed, the paramount sign that life was ebbing away. She was a strong Southern woman, one who had raised and loved mightily 10 chil dren and was always the home force on which they counted most. In the end, one by one, they stepped up and paid off their hefty debt to her.
