Crime, education
top issues in race
ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia
voters said public safety was
the most important issue
for them in their choice for
governor, according to a
statewide poll commissioned
by The Atlanta Journal-
Constitution.
The poll found that more
than 90 percent of Georgia
voters also list education,
lower taxes, health care, ille
gal immigration and protect
ing the environment as key
issues in the governor’s race
between Republican Gov.
Sonny Perdue, Democratic
Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor and
Libertarian Garrett Hayes.
The poll showed voters
seem less concerned about
the Republican-backed push
to require voters to show a
photo ID at the polls, with
only 60 percent of voters
listing it as an important
issue. The telephone poll of
625 voters was conducted
Sept. 27-29 by Mason-Dixon
Polling and Research Inc.
The margin of error for the
poll is plus or minus 4 per
centage points.

Police seize over
S3M in cocaine
NORCROSS (AP) - Police
found about $3.5 million in
cocaine hidden in a truck
that was impounded after a
routine traffic stop.
The commercial truck was
impounded Thursday night
after officers with Gwinnett
County’s Commercial
Vehicle Enforcement Unit
found safety violations.
The driver was cited but
not arrested.
But when officers thor
oughly searched the vehicle
at police headquarters, they
found 29 kilos of cocaine.
The cocaine was in sever
al packages hidden in the
sleeper berth of the truck,
said Cpl. Darren Moloney,
spokesman for the Gwinnett
County Police Department.
Police are pursuing leads
but Moloney said the driver,
whose name has not been
released, is probably long
gone. But the suspect may
have more to fear than being
arrested, Moloney said.
