WHY CANT WE BE FRIENDS: Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed on the final lap Sunday, just a mile shorj of the finish line. He was leading when Brian Vickers rear-ended Jimmie Johnson, which turned Johnson’s car into Earnhardt Jr.’s. Vickers went on to win the race. Earnhardt Jr., however, wasn’t mad at Vickers. He was upset with Jeff Gordon. “(Vickers) just got excit ed trying to push the No. 48 (Johnson),” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I don’t think he should lose any points or anything. He didn’t wreck anybody on purpose. He was just racing hard there.” Gordon complained sev eral times that Earnhardt Jr. was using his front bum per as a battering ram to push people through traffic - or knock people out of the way. “I pushed Jeff Gordon into the lead five times and every time I do that, he com plains that I’m bump-draft ing him in the corners an blah, blah, blah,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “So I’m not going to push him anymore. Besides, every time I help him out, he never gives it back in return. That’s why he doesn’t have too many friends out there.” [OCAYION, LOCATION. Teams were allowed to pick their spots on pit road based on results from pole qualifying, and the spots closest to Turn 1 went in a hurry. The reason: A giant television screen. The 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway is the big gest track in NASCAR, so it’s easy for pit crews to lose sight of their drivers. The giant Nextel Vision screens allowed teams at the end of pit road to turn around and watch the race. MARTIN STIU FISHING Although Mark Martin will drive 22 races next year for MB2 Motorsports and Chevrolet, he’s still trying to land a deal in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Jack Roush. The car owner, however, wasn’t biting. Roush uses Fords and he said it’s not likely Ford will allow a Chevrolet driver inside one of their trucks next year. “That’s an interesting prospect, but unless Ford changes their position on it and the other manufactur ers would do the same, we really don’t have the pre rogative to mix our manu factures and our programs,” Roush said. “I don’t see that. I’ll be talking to Cisco Codina on Sunday and I’ll certainly bring that to his attention, but I think it’s unlikely.” Prime Rib Seasoned to Perfection Biff" <831! ITS f*H 13§ • •87-4477 138884 [38838
