In July—the last month
of fund raising— the Perry,
Warner Robins, and Byron
Dollar Generals competed
against the Macon stores to
see who raise more money
for the schools’ literacy pro
grams.
The Perry/Warner Robins/
Byron team won and will
receive a steak dinner from
District Manager, Pat Geek,
with the meal being served
by the Macon team.

According to the release,
a diverse group of instruc
tors has been hand-picked to
make these presentations.
The class begins in
January and includes an
overnight retreat and a
ROPES course. In February,
the schedule features a visit
to the Legislature in session
in Atlanta, a tour of the capi
tol, and discussions with the
Houston County legislative
delegation.
The remaining full-day
sessions will normally be
held on the third Tuesday
of each month. They include
orientations, panel discus
sions and break-out group
visits to different sectors of
the community.

Lancaster. “We all work as
a team.”
The school is very proud
of Ms. Horrell for taking
the initiative to seek out the
grant for the school and it’s
students.
“Ms. Horrell’s taking the
time to fill out the form,
taking her time to research
the grant is a reflection of
the way she runs the media
center,” said Halstead.
Everyone agrees that it is
all for the kids.
“That’s why Dollar
General Does it, that’s why
we do it—it’s the children
that benefit,” said Horrell.

assignments include attend
ing a county commission or
city council meeting, accom
panying a police officer on
a routine patrol after dark,
attending a chamber ribbon
cutting or groundbreaking
ceremony, teaching in a pub
lic school classroom, serving
as a volunteer in an indigent
care facility or hospice or
soup kitchen, and attending
a chamber Business-After-
Hours as the chamber’s
guest.
The class will select and
plan a class project. It must
meet a community need that
is not being addressed by
any community agency, leave
a lasting and visible impact,
and be briefed at the gradu
ation banquet.
The class size is limited
to 25, and tuition is $750,
which covers all expenses.
In order to graduate, atten
dance is mandatory. Class
members and their employ
ers should understand and
commit to the attendance
requirements before apply
ing.
