2B THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2006 The Bears’ D.J. Dodson attempts to avoid a Colquitt County tackier this past Friday at McConnell- Talbert Stadium. ENI/Garv Harmon RANKED From page iB The Devils then lost a touchdown pass that would have given them the lead in the third quarter, but there was an ineligible receiver call. Johnson’s main con cern would be the defense with its experience and two of the best linebackers he said he’s seen this year. “They look like they're doing more with them than a year ago,” he said. “They are running a 50 and they have two linebackers who can really motor to the ball. The four secondary guys may be the most athletic group we’ve seen. “We need to block them and get the ball moving on the ground, then try to set up some play-action pass es. We don’t want their offense out there a whole lot because they have Troupe. If you keep the ball away from them, your defense has a better chance of stopping them.” When the Bears do have to play defense, it may be CLEATS f WEVE E>To«\ \ KtJOW! Johnson said it will be important to stop the run ning back with the front line players, like end Dexter Holman, tackle Brandon Craig and Princeton Dean and Trent Powell at the nose, and allow the second ary, being led this year by Dedrick Early, to focus on the wideouts. “If they get to running the football on us, we’re going to be in for a long night,” said Johnson. In the Colquitt game, Houston made a major per sonnel switch on offense by using Martez King, who has been playing quarterback since last year, at a wing back with Eric O’Neal, the region’s top rusher, and DJ Dodson. “There’s still tinker ing going on there,” said Johnson. “It has helped us, though. It gives us three backs who can carry the football, and it’s enabled Eric to have more run ning room because people are scared we’re going to come back with the counter Y<*A/T^BEEr^ / EVER HE AFP ft[?E OTP i l OF PAFEMTE? They’re not as quick to get to that side as they were earlier. “But if you don’t block people, it doesn’t matter what you do.” Johnson hasn’t had to worry about blocking from his senior offensive line, which includes Dylan Thompson, Jimmy Bailey and Reggie Smith, who’s led the trap plays at center. He is also seeing improve ment from sophomore Jeff Thompson at quarterback. His play enabled the Bears to make the King move. Against Colquitt, Thompson only threw four times, two of which were dropped by the receivers. Warner Robins is the only team unbeaten in the region so far at 2-0. The Bears remember all too well last year starting strong in the league then sputtering at the end. “We have a long way to go,” said Johnson. “We have three more games. We have Tift after a short week. Coming off two good (wins), I hope we can keep that momentum going.” I www gocofr!icsxoiTi^Q~* T U'3 | l Cleatsmail(s)aol com j / Ol\. Winning the first two is big. If we win, the sec ond game is probably against Luella, who’s pretty tough.” Luella, from Region 2- AAAAA, played Bradwell Institute (3-AAAAA) in the first round. If Warner Robins is successful with Hiram, the Demonettes would then get either Union Grove, champi ons of 2-AAAAA, or Jenkins of Savannah. Warner Robins coach Brenda Arnett, on Monday, said she was attempting to learn about Hiram in order to plan her pitching strate gies. She said she does know how good Union Grove is. The coach said the team tried not to worry too much about that loss, where the Bears came back from a 1-0 deficit in the seventh inning. “We have to go on,” said Arnett. “We’re playing for the next round now. That’s our biggest concern.” It was the first region title for Houston County under Griffin in her four seasons. It happened with a roster featuring just one senior, infielder Bethany Crenshaw, and some starters playing varsity softball for the first time. “I told the girls before we started that we couldn’t give in,” she said about winning the region. “They didn’t give up. We’re still pretty excited about it, but the state is more important. “Hopefully they won’t be as nervous as they were for the region championship. Some of them were nervous. Some of them weren’t. I hope the experience they’ve already had they’ll take into their first state tournament. We’ll see how they react.” Warner Robins has only three losses all season, two Jeanne White of Warner Robins. The fall includ ed a perfect game for junior pitcher Kristen Graham. “It’s been a good year,” said Arnett. “The kids have been great. They’ve learned a lot and gotten better.” Graham will have the ball for the Hiram game, but Arnett said she wouldn’t hesitate to use other arms depending on whom else the Demonettes face along the way. She has Amber Conlon, a senior, and infielder Jensen Barrett with pitching expe rience. Griffin has mainly relied on Chelsea Burroughs in the pitcher’s circle, but hinted she may go another direction for the first game. Neither coach wants to be in a situation of having to win four in a row Saturday to keep the season alive. “If we go out, hit the ball and play good defense, we’ll be in good shape,” said Griffin. Houston County was one game from the final 8 last year before losing to East Coweta. Warner Robins, as a Class AAAA school, also had its best sectional success in 2005 with three games, the third being a 1-0 loss to Eagle’s Landing. The leader in that flight, Doris Hewell, shot an 86 the first day. Duke is tied for second with an 88, Stahl and Evans are in third with a 90, Carpenter and Greer are in fourth - with four other golf ers - with a 91. Smith is in seventh with a 93.
