“As we travel out to locate
our first site, it is still hard
to find the streets since most
surface street signs have
been washed away and not
replaced. Some local hom

own signs and hung them
at a nearby intersection.
The hurricane/flood has also
physically changed some
routes, so it is more difficult
to locate the homes.

Question: I’ve heard
that Attention Deficit
Disorder is controversial
and that it may not even
exist. You obviously dis
agree and believe that
ADD does exist.
Dobson: Yes, I disagree,
although the disorder has
become faddish and it tends
to be overdiagnosed. But
when a child actually has
this problem, I assure you
his or her parents and teach
ers don’t have to be con
vinced.
Question: What does
behavioral research tell
us about the best way
to raise children? Have
scientific studies spelled
out what works and
what doesn’t, especially
regarding how to disci
pline properly?
Dobson: My answer may
sound like heresy coming
from a man who spent 10
years of his life as a profes
sor of pediatrics, responsible
for medical and behavioral
research, but I don’t believe
the scientific community is
capable of determining the
best parenting techniques.
There have been some
worthwhile studies, to be
sure, but the subject of disci
pline almost defies definitive
investigation. Why? Because
the only way to study this
topic scientifically would
be to place newborns ran
domly in “permissive” vs.

So went our conversation. I
was visibly shaken knowing
my son had been involved in
such a perilous undertaking.
I had to stop thinking about
it. I thanked the Lord and
His angels for looking over
Bill and David and keeping
them safe.
We raise our children to
the best of our ability but
never know when they are
going to put themselves in
harm’s way. When they start
driving the car, riding with
other teenagers and going
on dates, we pray for their
safety, pacing the floor and
waiting up for their return
home.
A minister once told me
of a Biblical principal taken
from the book of Hosea that
if applied would protect our
loved ones. Just as there are
physical laws such as gravity,
there are also spiritual laws
her to watch us remove her
possessions and stack them
by the curb to be trucked
away forever.
“At the end of the day,
we circle up, thank God
for his blessings and keep
ing us safe, present a Bible
signed by all the workers,
some handmade crosses,
and one volunteer presents
the homeowner some bread
baked before the trip to New
Orleans. Then we split up
and move on to the other
homes. We do as much as we
can, but others will have to
return.”
Hamilton says that while
many in New Orleans have
lost all their material wealth
“they still have their faith,
and they need our help. They
still smile and are not angry
because they know the Lord
will provide.”

“disciplined” families, and
then keep them under close
observation for 10 or 15
years. Since it is impossible
to do that, researchers have
tried to tease out informa
tion where they could find
it. But family relationships
are so multidimensional and
complicated that they almost
defy rigorous scrutiny.
Indeed, most of the stud
ies reported are scientifical
ly useless. For example, Dr.
David Larson, psychiatrist
and formerly a researcher
at the National Institutes of
Health, reviewed 132 articles
in professional journals that
purported to investigate the
long-term consequences of
corporal punishment. He
found most of them flawed
in design. Ninety percent of
the studies failed to distin
guish between good homes
where spanking was admin
istered by loving parents,
and those bordering on (or
actually inflicting) child
abuse. This distinction is
critical for obvious reasons.
Dr. Larson concluded that
the findings were invalidat
ed by this failure to consider
the overall health of fam
ily relationships.To repeat,
the consequences of various
approaches to parental dis
cipline appear to be beyond
the reach of social research.
It is simply not possible to
study this complex subject
scientifically without warp
ing families to set up the
research design. Even if such
studies were conducted, the
researchers would be study
ing contrived families not

that govern our existence.
Hosea prayed for a provi
dential protective hedge
around his wayward wife,
Gomer.
Accordingly, we should peti
tion God to place a ‘Hedge
of Protection’ around our
children so high, so strong
and so impenetrable that
evil cannot get to them and
no harm can befall them.
People who have applied this
principal tell me that it real
ly works.
A father whose daugh
ter was on drugs and run
ning with the wrong crowd
told me that he prayed
unceasing for his daughter
for over a year. As God’s
hedge became stronger and
strqnger through his daily
prayers, his daughter began
to change.
Evil influences were
blocked out and no longer
could get to her. She finally
came around and became
the type of person she was
raised to be.

I found the answer to
that question while on a

The evangelistic team

While waiting for travel

Others in the vehicle
