Guard to get Naval
base property
ATLANTA (AP) - The
Georgia National Guard
will take possession of the
Naval Air Station Atlanta
property when the facility
closes as a result of the Base
Realignment and Closure
Committee (BRAC) decision,
several public officials said
Thursday.
The 107-acre property is
next to Dobbins Air Reserve
Base in Cobb County.
“This development comes
at an excellent time for the
Georgia National Guard,
when we are asking our citi
zen soldiers to perform at a
higher level than ever before
in Georgia history,” Gov.
Sonny Perdue said. “The
Naval Air Station has been
a good neighbor for Cobb
County residents, and the
transition to the National
Guard will ensure the long
term viability of the proper
ty and jobs in the surround
ing area.”
Joining the governor in
making the announce
ment were Republican U.S.
Sens. Saxby Chambliss
and Johnny Isakson, and
Republican U.S. Reps. Phil
Gingrey and Tom Price. The
state received confirmation
of the deal Wednesday in a
memorandum from Joseph
W Whitaker, deputy assis
tant secretary of the Army.
“This was the result of
a great deal of work by so
many people, and this tran
sition will further enhance
the strong military presence
in Georgia and enhance the
capabilities of the Georgia
National Guard,” Chambliss
said.
The senator said the guard
will benefit from the train
ing and resources at the new
facility.

15-year-old girls in the death
of their adoptive mother.
Brenda and Catherine
O’Connell will be tried as
adults for the Aug. 6 stran
gulation of Muriel O’Connell,
57. Police believe they killed
their mother after an argu
ment and then tried to make
it seem like self-defense by
putting a knife next to the
body.
Police say the teenagers
told a neighbor they had been
fighting with their mother
and that she was dead. The
girls were charged with the
death two days later.
Muriel O’Connell appar
ently told neighbors she
feared for her life just a few
hours before her death.
She adopted the two girls
from Guatemala. The two
are not related biologically
but knew each other in their
home country.
The girls are in custody at
the Regional Youth Detention
Center in Lawrenceville.

ernor he would pump more
money into a program that
picks up the tab for Georgia
families cut off from a
Medicaid program for chil
dren with severe disabili
ties.
Taylor, a Democrat hop
ing to unseat Republican
Gov. Sonny Perdue, vowed
to increase funding of the
Katie Beckett waiver pro
gram, which helps the fami
lies of disabled and medi
cally needy children who
would not normally qualify
for Medicaid get funds.
About 2,000 Georgia kids
with long-term disabilities
lost their Medicaid cover
age since last year, when
the state began tightening
eligibility rules to meet fed
eral standards, the state
Department of Community
Health said.
A $7.6 million founda
tion created by lawmak
ers in March is designed to
assist the families ineligible
for coverage, though Taylor
questioned whether there
was a long-term commit
ment to fund the program.
The state Department of
Community Health said the
waiver program is in no dan
ger of being cut.

Ga. Aquarium getting
sl3 million overhaul
ATLANTA (AP) - Lefts
than a year after opening,
the world’s largest aquari
um is getting a multimillion
dollar makeover.
The Georgia Aquarium
broke ground this month
on sl3 million worth of
improvements on a facility
that has hosted more than
3 million visitors since it
opened last November.
Officials say the upgrades
show their commitment to
keeping the aquarium - a
$250 million gift from Home
Depot co-founder Bernie
Marcus - a world-class
attraction for years to come.
“This is what you want to
be concerned about as a pro
fessional in this type of field
- that you don’t get stale
and you don’t let your facili
ty run down,” said aquarium
director Jeff Swanagan.
Among the upgrades
