bemoaned the closure of the
state’s Ford Motor Co. plant
south of Atlanta as the last
Taurus sedan rolled off the
59-year-old assembly line
and the doors rolled shut.
“It’s a sad day for Georgia,”
Taylor said as he met with
displaced Ford auto workers
at a union hall.
Republican Gov. Sonny

OBITUARIES
HAN C. NELSON
Dan C. Nelson, a longtime Perry resident and respected
businessman, died yesterday after a brief illness. He was 79
years old.
Nelson was born in Goodwater, Ala., in 1927. His family
moved to Marshallville in the late 1930 s and eventually set
tled in Perry in 1941. Not long after serving in the Navy fol
lowing World War 11, Nelson formed a business partnership
with another Perry resident, Clifton Turk. Initially, Nelson
and Turk purchased a tractor-trailer for
delivering goods throughout the country. In ^ —
the late 19405, they were awarded a local
(Julf (til service station franchise. The part- J|
nership went on to establish a successful flpv HL
garage, auto parts store, and new and used HI
auto dealership, where thousands of area 1 I
residents purchased vehicles until 1993,
when Nelson retired.
In the mid 19605. Nelson was one of the W A I
founding directors of the First National
Bank of Perry, and he served as a direc- NELSON
tor there through its purchase by Bank of
America in the 19905. Nelson was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Perry, the Perry chapter of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Masonic
Lodge.
In 1953, Nelson married Perry schoolteacher Mary
McDougal, who died in 1978. In 1980, he married former
schoolteacher and local author Bobbe Smith Hickson, who
survives him.
Nelson also is survived his children: Danna Nelson Smith
and Pierce Nelson, both of Atlanta and Hickson’s chil
dren Seabie W. Hickson 111, of Peachtree City, Ga., Cindy
Hickson Lamb, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Kitty Hickson
Davis, of Alpharetta, Ga. Nelson had two sons-in-laws and
two daughters-in-laws: Greg Smith, Mark Davis, Karen
Hickson, and Cathy Nelson. Nelson also is survived by nine
grandchildren, Kristen Lamb, Stephanie Lamb, Marcus
Davis, Morgan Hickson, Diana Davis, Colin Smith, Seabie
W. Hickson IV Dan Nelson, and Will Nelson. He is also sur
vived by four siblings: Faye Schollenberger, Melvin Nelson,
Charles Nelson, and Jarrett Nelson, all of Perry.
A memorial service followed by a visitation with the fam
ily will be held at First Baptist Church of Perry on Saturday
at 2 p.m. with a private burial service for family at the
Perry Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make
donations to the Heart of Georgia Hospice (Serenity Gate),
Perry Volunteer Outreach, or the Benevolence Fund at the
First Baptist Church of Perry. Watson-Hunt funeral home
of Perry is handling the arrangements.
