Wednesday proclaimed “Family Literacy Day” Special to the Journal Warner Robins Mayor Donald Walker, according to a release, has joined Gov. Sonny Perdue in proclaiming Wednesday, “Family Literacy Day”. “Low literacy skills can render parents unable to teach their own children such daily tasks as how to read a medicine bottle, read a map, make correct change or prepare school home work,” Walker read from the proclamation. Calling attention to a long-time, multi-faceted city effort to increase learn ing at all levels, Walker, according to the release, focused on the Houston County Certified Literate Community Program as a successful example of work ing to elevate literacy. CLCP a consortium of concerned individuals from all walks of life, partners with the city and Middle Georgia Technical College in behalf of adult literacy including the GED program. Board Chairwoman Kathy Hart called the mission vital, particularly, she said, consid ering that four of 10 Georgia first graders will not gradu ate from high school. Additionally, CLCP Program Coordinator Skip Holmes calls attention to a recent GPTV interview during which the Governor revealed that those with a diploma will outlive the 1.2 million adults in the state without one by almost 10 years.
