HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
Department updates
protected species list
«
Special to the Journal
The Georgia Board of
Natural Resources has
approved the state’s first
comprehensive revision of
its protected plant and ani
mal lists since 1992, based
on the recommendations of
the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources, Wildlife
Resources Division.
These lists specify what
species are protected under
Georgia’s Wildflower
Preservation Act and
Georgia’s Endangered
Wildlife Act, and are increas
ingly used to help prioritize
funding for conservation and
research on rare species.
The update includes add
ing 121 species, deleting 18
species, and changing the
status of 43 species that were
already listed.
Many of the new additions
are plants, as well as numer
ous crayfish and freshwater
mussel species. The changes
were made based on scientific
data submitted by members
of the public and biologists.
Prohibitions specified in the
Endangered Wildlife Act and
the Wildflower Preservation
Act can be used to deter the
illegal harvest of plants and
animals.
While habitat loss is the
most severe threat to most
of Georgia’s rare species, cer
tain species such as turtles or
crayfish face a very signifi
cant threat from over-collec
tion.
Georgia law specifically
states that rules and regula
tions related to the protec
tion of state protected species
shall not affect rights in pri
vate property.
Prohibitions are limited to
the capture, killing, or selling
of protected species and the
protection of the habitat of
these species on public lands.
BEATS

not without a little help from
a Tift County defender who
was called for pass interfer
ence.
Mark Wright Jr. then com
pleted passes to Brandon
Jordan, Grant and Antwan
Hamilton to get them all the
way to the Blue Devils 5.
Three plays from that spot,
however, yielded little - not
even a third-and-one helped
- so they brought in David
Clark. He kicked a 23-yard
field goal to make it the final
score, 17-10.
That came with 1:29
left to play Warner Robins
attempted an on-sides kick
following but the Blue Devils
were able to recover it. The
Demons’ defense helped
them get another chance,
however, with seconds left,
but that threat ended on an
interception.
The loss means the Demons
(5-3 overall), Tift County (7-1
overall) and Lowndes are all
tied atop Region 1-AAAAA
with identical 3-1 records.
FALL

seventh-inning rally
Thursday in the opening
game in Columbus against
Woodstock High. Warner
Robins was unable to
overcome the top-ranked
Wolverines, falling 5-3.
Senior Amber Conlon got
the win against Houston
with 11 strikeouts in seven
innings.
Collins Hill had just one
clutch hit against Warner
Robins junior Kristen
Graham. It was a ball that,
according to coach Brenda
Arnett, got caught in the
wind and sailed over her
outfielder’s reach. Two runs
would score, and it was all
Collins Hill would need.
“We didn’t hit at all,” said
Arnett, summarizing her
team’s offensive output.
The Demonettes and the
Bears, both with state cham
pionship seasons in slow
pitch softball, made the Elite
Eight for the first time in
fastpitch. Houston County
lost to Peachtree Ridge
9-4 in the opening round
Thursday.
