Children writing letters to God
The following letters
were written by chil
dren:
Dear God, thank you for
the baby brother, but what I
wanted was a puppy.
Dear God, I bet it’s very
hard for you to love every
body in the world. There are
only four people in my fam
ily and I can never do it.
Dear God, if you watch on
Sunday, I will show you my
new shoes.
Dear God, I would like to
live 900 years like the guy in
the Bible.
Dear God, I think about
you sometimes even when

Reward-based toilet training usually gets the best results with children
Question: Our 24-
month-old son is not yet
toilet-trained, although
my mother-in-law feels
he should be. Should
we spank him for using
his pants instead of the
potty?
Dr. Dobson: No. I suggest
that your mother-in-law cool
down a bit. It is entirely pos
sible that your child can’t
control himself at this age.
The last thing you want to
do is punish a child of any
age for an offense that he
can’t comprehend.
If I had to err on this mat
ter, it would be in the direc
tion of being too late, rather
than too early. Furthermore,
the best approach to potty
training is with rewards
and encouragement rather

Question: Is there any
way to prevent a child

our house nearly every
night, and it is really
hard on my husband and
me.
Dr. Dobson: Yes, you can
usually prevent your child
from going into stage-four
sleep by giving him a minor
amount of medication. I
wouldn’t suggest that you
do that unless the night ter
rors are regular and disrup
tive to adult sleep patterns.

“unlearned” by withhold
ing those rewards. It sounds
complex, but the technique
is simple and very applicable
to Karen’s problem.
Why do you think she
whines instead of speaking in
a normal voice? Because you
have rewarded that sound by
letting it get your attention!
As long as Karen is speak
ing in her usual voice, you
are too busy to listen to her.
Like most toddlers, she prob
ably babbles all day long, so
you have often tuned out
most of her verbiage. But
when she speaks in a grat
ing, irritating, obnoxious
tone, you turn to see what is
wrong. Therefore, Karen’s
whining brings results; her
normal voice does not, and
she becomes a whiner.

Would you request to live
forever on earth or, after
this life, to have eternal life
in heaven?
God makes eternal life
possible through a simple
act of faith.
The scripture states: “God
so loved the world, that he
gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in
him should not perish, but
have everlasting life.”
It may benefit all of us to
write God a letter to clarify
what we really want in this
life and in the hereafter, so
we can begin making prepa
rations to attain it.
- Proverbs 12:19, Living
Bible)
The situation itself uncov
ered a bit more than one
would choose to reveal. The
reply, however, uncovered
an admirable quality.
Rather than make a
meaningless vow never to
have it happen again, a
truthful admission of a pos
sible (though not probable)
reoccurrence was made.
The accident could have
happened to anyonewell,
not exactly anyone... only
women wearing two-piece
bathing suits in troubled
waters!
In order to break the
habit of whining, you must
simply reverse the process.
You should begin by saying,
“I can’t hear you because
you’re whining, Karen. I
have funny ears; they just
can’t hear whining.” After
this message has been passed
along for a day or two, you
should show no indication of
having heard a moan-tone.
You should then offer imme
diate attention to anything
she says in a normal voice.
If this control of reward is
applied properly, I guarantee
it will achieve the desired
results. Most human learn
ing is based on this prin
ciple, and the consequences
are certain and definite. Of
course, Grandma and Uncle
