ALABAMA —The Bessemer (pop. 29,672) Hall of History museum is housed in a 1916 railroad depot and showcases artifacts from the city's past as a mining, steelmaking and industrial center. One of the museum's more popular artifacts is Adolf Hitler's typewriter. ARKANSAS —The Hot Springs (pop. 35,750) Mountain Tower offers stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside, including the Ouachita Mountains. The 216-foot tower was built in 1983 and is the third such structure to oversee the mountain. The first, built in 1877, was destroyed by lightning, and the second proved unstable and was torn down. FLORIDA Tire Fishin' Chix, a national wom ens-only fishing club founded in Pensacola (pop. 56,255), combines fashion —think cute pink rubber boots—with fishing. Founder Claudia Espenscheid calls it "Armani-style" fishing. GEORGIA —Billed as the world's largest drive in theater, the Wilderness Outdoor Movie Theater in Trenton (pop. 1,942) opened in July on 45 acres. The 50-by-l()()-fbot screen is mounted on posts that are eight stories high. The landscape was designed at a slope, similar to stadium seating. KENTUCKY— Completed in 1816. the Washington County Courthouse in Springfield (pop. 2,6.34) is the state's oldest courthouse still in use. The marriage certificate of President Abraham Lin coln's parents, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, is housed in the courthouse. LOUISIANA —Fred's Lounge in Mamou (pop. 3,566) is known worldwide as the home of Cajun music. For more than 40 years, a live Cajun music show has been broadcast from the local bar and eatery. The Saturday morning show is broadcast by KVPI Radio in nearby Ville Platte (pop. 8,145). MISSISSIPPI —People who travel to Merigold (pop. 664) often are looking for artists Lee and Pup McCarty. The couple has been transforming local clay into prize-winning pots and vessels at “The Barn" studio since 1954. NORTH CAROLINA —The largest sanc tuary for rare and endangered lemurs, outside their native Madagascar, is the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, established in 1966 as the Duke Primate Center by Duke University. The center houses more than 230 lemurs. WEST VIRGINIA —In his workshop in Eleanor (pop. 1,345), Jimmy Tribble has a home run business making hybrid baseball bats. The Metal Wood Bats have a bamboo wood barrel and an aluminum handle. 3^- Italian Stuffing 2 (8-ounce) loaves French bread (not sour dough), cut into I-inch cubes 1 cup chopped fresh parsley Zi cup chopped onion Vi cup chopped celery 2 garlic cloves, minced 'A cup chopped red bell pepper I cup grated Romano cheese Zi teaspoon pepper IVi teaspoons salt 4 teaspoons dried oregano 3 cups chicken broth I cup margarine or butter Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 2- quart ovenproof dish. Mix bread cubes, parsley, onion, celery, garlic and bell pep per in a large bowl. In another bowl, combine cheese, pepper, salt and oregano; combine with bread mixture. Heat broth and margarine together until margarine is melted. Pour over bread mixture; stir just until evenly moistened. Spoon into baking dish and cover with foil. Bake 45 minutes. Remove foil for the last 15 minutes to brown top, if desired.
