2A ♦ TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2006 WRPD graduates latest class from Citizens Police Academy By RAY LIGHTNER Journal Staff Writer What do two airmen, two English ladies, a couple of married couples, residents both black and white con cerned about their neigh borhood, veterans and a newspaper reporter have in common? They are latest group to graduate from the Warner Robins Citizens Police Academy. They all spent two hours a night for the past 12 Tuesdays together, learning about the Warner Robins Police Department. “The idea,” explained instructor Capt. John Clay, “is y’all get to know us as we get to know you. Citizens and police work together to make a better community.” Clay said, “when people ask ‘why do the police do that?’ y’all might be able to answer.” Instructors like Clay, Field Training Officer Mike Fennell, K-9 Training Officer Wayne Fisher and Patrol Sgt. Todd Rountree explained in their classes why officers do what they do. Most of the time it is for their own safety. “We are no different than y’all. We are citizens with a common interest in the safe ty of society,” Fisher said. It’s not like on TV A field trip on the first week of the 12-week class gave participants a tour of Warner Robins Police head quarters on Young Avenue - including what those arrest ed see during their stay from the backseat of the car to the holding cell. Another on the third week showed particpants the county 911 center, which dispatches police, fire and ambulance services for the cities and the county. During the course stu dents leaned how to take fingerprints, search for a missing person and had the opportunity to fire the guns the officers use from a Glock handgun, a M-16 rifle and a shotgun that fires bean bags. It is a non-lethal means of stopping someone who may be trying to harm himself or others. Maj. John Wagner, opera tions commander told the graduates, “18 years ago I sat in your spot when then- Capt. Harry Dennard taught the class. You see what goes on behind the scenes. You’ve got to see the human side. We’re just people like you.” Warner Robins. ■ AARP DRIVER SAFETY - A comprehen sive driving course designed to update drivers aged 50 and over on the knowledge and skills of driving will be held today from 5-9 p.m. at the Houston Health Pavilion EduCare Center.
