This newspaper is a member of The Georgia Press Association, The National Newspaper Association and The Associated Press State Briefs Court urged to throw out verdict ATLANTA (AP) Georgia’s high court was asked Tuesday to overturn a verdict against a woman who was found guilty of murdering her police officer husband by poisoning him with antifreeze. Atlanta attorney Don Samuel told the Georgia Supreme Court that a Cobb County judge was wrong to let the jury hear details about another death: that of Lynn Turner’s boyfriend who died six years later, also from antifreeze poisoning. If the court throws out the 2004 conviction, it could jeopardize the state’s pending death penalty case against Turner in her boy friend’s death. Samuel said Cobb Superior Court Judge James Bodiford should not have allowed “sim ilar transaction evidence” of Turner’s boyfriend’s death during Turner’s trial for her husband’s murder. He said the reasons stated for doing so “did not establish a logi cal connection between the two murders.” Turner, a former 911 operator, was found guilty in Houston County of the 1995 murder of her hus band, Cobb County officer Glenn Turner. She was sen tenced to life in prison. The case was moved out of Cobb because of pretrial publicity. Since her conviction, Turner, 38, of Cumming, has also been charged with murder in the 2001 death of Randy Thompson, a Forsyth County firefighter and the father of her two children. That trial is due to begin Jan. 8 in Forsyth County. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Turner. Both men were in their 30s when they died, and both deaths were initially ruled as natural. Only after TEAM! But women may not be moving up the ranks as quickly as men, one of the report’s authors said. Female faculty at UGA receive about 96 percent of men’s salaries at the associ ate professor level, 93 per cent at the full professor level and 85 percent across all faculty levels. Louisiana State University pays its female faculty about 73 per cent of what it pays male fac ulty - the widest gap among the SEC schools, according to the AAUP report. Men still make more than women at the full profes sor level because they began teaching 30 to 40 years ago when the profession favored men over women, said Martha West, co-author of the AAUP report and pro fessor at the University of California at Davis. “As women have inte- Tue 11/14 72/59 Few showers Highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s.
