With 97 percent of pre

morning, and 50.6 percent of
the vote in the Bth District,
U.S. Rep Jim Marshall, D-
Macon seems likely to be
heading back to the U.S.

to do more. It was nearly
1945 and everyone seemed
to either talk about it or go
and join up. I thought ‘Why
not me?’” Why not,me, to
help the wounded men?
“It was just the right thing
to do, to help out.”
So there, in Atlanta in
1945, she joined the Army
Nurses Corp to be one of the
more than 59,000 American
nurses served in the Army
Nurse Corps during World
War 11.
Myrtle Ruth said she
also enjoyed basic training.
Training for women who
would become officers was
held at then Camp Rucker
(Fort Rucker), in Alabama.

the provision that prevents
people on the registry from
living within 1,000 feet of a
church. These agreements
with the local authorities
“will allow these elderly
and ill people to live the
remainder of their lives with
dignity, receiving appropri

attorneys said.

Doug Moore, speaking
for Marshall, kept it simple

“It’s a victory,” he said.

there could be a recount, but

“The only formal exer

which, she added, they used
pretty often.
During her tenure, she did
her fair share of traveling.
She remembers training
at Emory. “Grady Hospital
had fine course of study,”
she said, but she refers to
the first time attending class
as a surprise for her. There
were African American stu
dents there as well. No one
was allowed to talk to these
students. Common practices
in those days, yet all of the
students were.there to fix to
help wounded soldiers recov

Later, she was assigned to
the General Weisel - Army
Transportation ATP 119, a
ship used in many transport
convoys to include an opera
tion designated as “Magic
Carpet Fleet”.
Among her personal papers
today, there is a commenda
tion letter that explains how

The enforcement of the
church provision would force

them in jail for not moving,
where local taxpayers would
be required to pay for their
costly medical care.
The local man is one of
three of the nine who are at

One of the others living
at home is 100 years old,
was released from prison a

In Houston County, the
count is final. Collins got
16,705 votes to Marshall’s
14,117. However, Marshall,
a former Macon mayor, got
a substantial boost with a

Upon returning to the
states, she was offered an
opportunity to join the newly
formed, Air Force Nursing
Corp. The establishment
of this corps of nurses was
1949. Many changes had
happened in the military
over the course of time and
the transfer of a large num
ber of her friends and col
leagues to the AFNC, made
Ruth Brewer anxious, she
said, to go with them.
Most of her career centered
on Moody Air Force Base in
Valdosta, and in her pro
fessional capacity she kept
learning and growing more
professional. Assigned to the
people on the registry takes
us into the realm of absurdi
ty,” said Sarah Geraghty, an
attorney at SCHR who was
representing the plaintiffs.
“Sheriffs are now required
by law to evict Alzheimer’s
patients and the terminally
ill from their nursing homes
if these facilities are within
1/5 of a mile of a church.
Never mind that some of
these patients cannot even
stand up, or walk without
assistance.”
“Forcing a terminally
ill man with less than six
months to live out of his
hospice care facility because
he resides within 1,000 feet
of a church is irrational and
does nothing to promote
children’s safety,” continues
Geraghty.
“Arresting someone who
is already locked in secured
nursing units with 24-hour
supervision, who poses no
threat to society, is yet more
evidence that this legisla
tion was poorly conceived
and badly written,” said
Geraghty.
“As an election year stunt
for an easy win, the Georgia
Legislature passed a badly
written sex offender law.

“Members of the Georgia

the fact that they wrote a

this year added churches and
school bus stops to the plac

to congregate like schools
and parks. Registered sex
offenders are prevented
from living within 1,000 feet
of any of these places.
Previous lawsuits have
prevented enforcement of
the school bus stop provi
sion.
The original case on the

visions was filed June 20,
prior to the new law taking
effect on July 1.
The court decisions so far
have required school boards

Oxendine talks annuity
Special to the Journal
Following are ques
tions and answers from
Georgia Insurance and
Fire Commissioner John
Oxendine:
Q: What is an annu
ity?
A: An annuity is a con
tract in which an insurance
company makes a series of
income payments at regu
lar intervals in return for
a premium or premiums
you have paid. Annuities
are most often bought for
future retirement income,
and can pay an income that
can be guaranteed to last as
long as you live.
Q: What are the differ
ent kinds of annuities?
A: There are several types
of annuities, all of which
carry varying levels of risk
and guarantees. To get the
most out of an annuity, it is
imperative that you know
the different options avail
able to you, as well as the
benefits each type provides.
