4C ♦ FRIDAY/SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10-11, 2006 James Winbon Golden James Winbon Golden served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. Golden graduat ed Georgia Military College with an Associate degree. Following that he enlisted and then got an early out to return to school. He attended Georgia College and received a BS degree in Business with an Accounting concentra tion. He was an accountant for many years following that until retiring last year from Mercer University. His greatest accomplish ment: “My children and now my grandchild Charlie.” John R. (Bob) McConnell II “I think I’m the only veteran discharged (both honorably) from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy on the same day. * “I graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West point in 1975, and served from June 4, 1975 to Jan. 1995 in the Army and the Navy, serving in nearly 40 countries and visiting or serving in all 50 states. I was in the Persian Gulf War in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Nassau with the U.S. Marines Amphib Group 2. “I was a U.S. Naval Aviator, and instructor naviagator with the EP-3 Airplane, Commander of the 7th Fleet’s VIP Navigator, and had top secret clearance. “I have taught math at Houston County High School, am a special education paraprofes sional at Perdue Elementary, and volunteered as a math tutor. I also work as a security guard for Tolleson Lumber and for Parker Security and Investigative Services; work part time at the Lamb’s Well Christian Book Store ”1 have eight children, including a daughter who is a U.S. Navy pilot, a son who is in the U.S. Air Force, and a son who is a U.S. Army MP in Bosnia.” & v v, Submitted Joe Kusar, center in photo, is shown with his buddies. Kusar was a member of Fox Company, 2 nd Battalion, sth5 th Marines and did a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1969-71. Lucien Tunison Lucien Tunison currently residents in Warner Robins. The former technical sergeant served in the Army from July 19, 1940 to Oct. 7, 1945. During that time, he was assigned to the Third Armored Division, First Army. “We were involved in five major campaigns,” Tunison said, “Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. We landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy eight days after D-Day.” Tunison added he was “fortunate” during his tenure to serve under the command of Gen. Courtney Hodges of Perry. He also said the unit was in contact with the enemy from the beaches of Normandy until they met Russian troops at the Elbe River. That was about May 8, 1945, he said. He also added the First Army set several records under the command of Hodges. James Raymond Dean James Raymond Dean has lived in Warner Robins since 1995. He retired from the Air Force in May 2003 after serv ing 26 years - 1977-2003. During those years, Dean was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in California, Araxos Air Base in Greece, Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan, Pease AFB in New Hampshire, Royal Air Force station Fairford in the United Kingdom, Headquarters USAF, the Pentagon and of course, Robins AFB Ga. Dean said probably one of his greatest moments in the ser vice came while stationed at the Pentagon. It was there, he was selected to stand inspection at the White House in 1990 by the first President Bush, who was greeting the Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary, Jozsef Antall. Lou Calleo Lou Calleo is a resident of Warner Robins. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 20, 1949 to Jan. 6, 1969. During that time, he spent 16 years aboard destroyers. Cole “I was inducted into he army at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, in March 1945. With little delay we were dressed out in all wool clothing and shipped out to Camp Blanding, Fla. Camp Blanding had over 20,000 soldiers in training when my outfit arrived. After six weeks training and two weeks in the hospi tal forv fractured feet, I was sent home for two weeks R&R, with orders to report in at Fort Ord, California by the end of the third week. The train ride to California was a nightmare. “Along he way we picked up passengers that had to stand up. When we left Atlanta, every seat was filled with Gl’s and duffle bags. You could not go any where on the train without walking on duffle bags and stepping over sleeping Gl’s. “We arrived at Fort Order after being delayed one day in Arizona while a collapsed bridge was being repaired. A total of five days on the rails! “One piece of good news: on the way out the a-bomb had been delivered. By the time we were ready to board ship the second bomb had been delivered. This caused a two-week delay for the Ralph A. Dorsett Ralph A. Dorsett, a resident of Byron, served in the U.S. Navy where he reached the rank of lieutenant. At one point during his tenure, he was home based at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland and with Patrol Squadron 44. During that time, he was also deployed to the naval station in Keflavik, Iceland. One of his accomplishments was as a pilot on, at the time, one of the Navy’s newest antisubmarine warfare aircraft, the Lockheed P3A Orion. His squadron flew patrols in the aircraft that covered the breadth of the Atlantic Ocean and with port calls at such locations as Bermuda, Newfoundland, Canada, the Azores, Puerto Rico and Europe. Most of us said, “Thank you, we will stay here and pray between heaves.” “We docked in Yokohama, Japan and traveled through Tokyo to our distribution center. Tokyo was unbe lievable.
