6A i ♦ FRIDAY/SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10-11, 2006 Parents question future with strong-willed child Question: What are the long-range implica tions of raising a strong willed child? What can we expect as the years go by? Dr. Dobson: Well, I can give you a few encouraging conclusions from our study. The tendencies of strong willed children (SWCs) are to return to parental values when they reach adulthood. Parents told us that 85 per cent of their grown SWCs (24 years of age and older) came back to what they had been taught -- entirely or at least “somewhat.” That is good news. Only 15 percent were so headstrong that they rejected their family’s core values into their mid-20s. In those exceptional cases, I’ll wager that other problems and sources of pain were involved. What this means, in effect, is that these tough-minded Dealing with invisible supernatural entities Two teachers appeared recently before the Crawford County Board of Education to request that the board cease its practice of having prayer before its meetings. One of the teachers is an atheist. The creed of Atheism reads: “An atheist loves himself and his fellow man instead of a god. He accepts that heaven is something for which we should work now - here on earth. He accepts that he can get no help through prayer, but that he must find in himself the inner convic tion and strength to meet ' 1 1 mmK gs Billy Powell Columnist life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and to enjoy it.” Atheists believe that school prayer is “a form of religious indoctrination that teaches children that there are invis-» ible supernatural entities which can be implored and appeased through mumbling prayers or reading words from holy books.” In a democracy, we should respect the religions of other people. Christians should not impose their beliefs on followers of other religions. Neither should adherents of other faiths attempt to suppress the way we wor ship. I do have problems, however, with atheists who say there is no Supreme Creator. Atheists are not to be ostracized but to be pit ied. They have no higher power to call upon in a crisis, whether it be a life or death matter, or to cope with the storms of life. That should be reassuring. Furthermore, if we coitld have evaluat ed these individuals at 35 instead of 24 years of age, even fewer would still be in rebellion against parental values. Second, raising a strong willed child (or a house full of them) can be a lonely job for parents. You can begin to feel like yours is the only family that has gone through these struggles. Don’t believe it. In anoth er study of 3,000 parents, we found that 85 percent of families had at least one strong-willed child. This is parenthood. This is human nature. of death, an atheist cannot pray to a Supreme Being to preserve his soul. Death to atheists has a ring of final ity. If there is no God. there will be no tomorrows-the soul faces extinction, never to exist again. Death to an atheist amounts to annihila tion of the soul and its ban ishment to a nether world where there is no thought, no remembrance, and no knowledge of ever having lived. That has to be man’s worse fear to face the prospects of dying and never living again. I stood on the beach recently and marveled at the vast ocean whose tides move like synchronized clockwork. I gazed with wonderment at the expanse of blue sky that touched the ocean’s horizon and rose above me. Directly behind was the blazing sun that warmed my body in the gentle breeze. The earth upon which I stood was tilted at the pre cise angle that permitted the existence of life, its gravity keeping me from floating off into outer space. Along came a man, his wife, and their young son walking on the beach, picking up sea shells. Who put them here? Was it by chance? Millions of years ago, did chemicals spontane ously produce life in a one celled creature that evolves over eons of time into a man? Or did God make man and woman as the Holy Bible teaches? We need not look hard to witness the evidence of God in creation. Psalm 19: 1 states: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the fir mament sheweth his handy work.” Psalm 14:1 was writ ten to atheists: “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.” Arnold’s Auto Servic 1202 Main St. Perry, Ga. 31069 Complete Car Maintenance Pick-up & Delivery **Road Servi< Call Thomas or Shelby 987-9439 nm I 00040089 . All nor mal human beings respond negatively to criticism and rejection. Conversely, some of us crave affirmation so much that we’ll do almost anything to get it. Children are especially vulnerable to those who use affirmation to manipulate them. As someone said, “Whoever gives your kids praise and attention has power over them.” That could be a drug dealer, a gang member, or anyone who could harm them. People with evil inten tions know how to use praise to get what they want from lonely kids. This is, in fact, the tech nique routinely used by pedophiles to abuse their victims sexually. Each sexual exploitation lasts for seven years, typi brothers, sisters and other relations, to allow us daily pleasures.
