Above are some scenes from the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ninth Annual
Fall Challenge and Taste of Perry held Oct. 24.
CLARIFICATION
The first two paragraphs of information ran in the Friday I Saturday Houston Daily
Journal. It was taken from a news report in the HHJ from 1965. The third paragraph
contains an update on how Dorsett’s career progressed following that report:
Ralph A. Dorsett, a resident of Byron, served in the U.S. Navy where he reached the
rank of lieutenant. At one point during his tenure, he was home based at the Naval Air
Station Patuxent River in Maryland and with Patrol Squadron 44. During that time, he
was also deployed to the naval station in Keflavik, Iceland.
One of his accomplishments was as a pilot on, at the time, one of the Navy’s newest
antisubmarine warfare aircraft, the Lockheed P3A Orion. His squadron flew patrols in
the aircraft that covered the breadth of the Atlantic Ocean and with port calls at such
locations as Bermuda, Newfoundland, Canada, the Azores, Puerto Rico and Europe.
Dorsett retired at the rank of commander after 22 years of service in the Navy
j Reserves.
The day continued at
Houston Lake Country
Club for the golf scramble
and lunch.
The winning golf scram
ble teams were: First
place, CB&T Bank of
Middle Georgia; second,
Security Bank and third,
Houston Springs. Closest
to the pin winners were:
Floyd Gregory, Terry
Padgett, Chad Layfield and
Darren Farber. Longest
drive winners were: Jason
Stevens, Jerry Lasseter,
Chad Layfield and Darren
Farber.
The Taste of Perry, per
the release, ended the fun
filled day on a high note at
the Houston Lake Country
Club Pavilion.
Local restaurants and
caterers provided samplings
of their specialty dishes,
the Mossy Creek Band per
formed live and the atmo
sphere was “beautiful.”
Winners for the Best
Decorated Tables were:
First place, Priester’s
Pecans; second, Anderson’s
Bakery and Catering and
third, The Front Porch Tea
Room.
