Let's face it Bad things
happen when you least expect
it. You ’re driving down the
interstate at full speed
(most likely late for a
meeting), when suddenly your
car wobbles.
You immediately slow down and
pull off to the side of the road only
to find that your tire's flat. And, as
fate would have it, you can't find
your cell phone. Now, not only
are you late, but you are stranded.
It may take many precious min
utes for some sweet soul to fix it
for you. Plus, let’s be honest with
ourselves, a woman can never be
too safe; a stranger may actually
be dangerous.
Instead of relying on prince
charming coming to the rescue,
follow these ten simple rules and
get back on the road in no time.
So, roll up those sleeves and get to
work.
First you’ll need the following
items to change a tire:
• A properly inflated spare tire
• A carjack, this instrument hoists
up your car. enabling you to change
the tire.
• A lug wrench, this instrument let’s
you loosen and tighten the lug nuts,
holding your tire in place.
Often times, your car owner's
manual (usually located in the glove
compartment) will tell you where
these materials are located. Several

other items, although not necessary,
may be helpful - a pair of gloves, a
flashlight and tire blocks.

Make sure that these instruments
- spare tire, jack and wrench - are in
your car at all times. After all, you're
not a psychic, so you never know
when you'll get a flat.
Step 1 : Make sure you have pulled
oft'the road. Ideally, you’ll stop on
a straight section of the highway so
that cars will have more time to see
and avoid you. Turn on your hazard
lights immediately. Most importantly,
stop on a level surface because it’s
unsafe to change a tire on an incline.
Step 2 : Retrieve the necessary
tools (mentioned above).
Step 3: Remove the hubcaps, if
necessary. Each car is different;
consult your owner’s manual for
instructions on removing hubcaps.
Step 4 : After the hubcap is
removed, begin to loosen the lug
nuts. Turn the lug wrench
counterclockwise while doing so. If
the lug nuts won't budge, try
jumping on the lug wrench to loosen
them. Only loosen the lug nuts; don’t
actually take them off, yet.
Step 5: Position the carjack in the
correct location. In order to find this
ideal location, consult your owner’s
manual. Generally, there’s a small
plate, located just in front of the rear
tires and just behind the front tires,
which the jack should contact.
Step 6: Make sure that the jack is

properly positioned and raise the jack
until it contacts the frame. Raise the
car until it is at least 6 inches off the
ground, any less and you won’t be
able to put the new tire on the car.
Step 7: Remove the flat. This step
sounds easy enough. Just remove the
lug nuts from the bolts. Remember
where you put all the nuts; you’ll
need them again momentarily. Grad
the wheel at a nine o’clock and three
o’clock position and pull the wheel
straight off the car.
Step 8 : Put on the spare.
Congratulations: you’re done with
the grunt work. When putting on the
spare tire, position it in front of the
wheel well, that thing that holds the
wheel on the car. Align the holes on
the tire with the bolts on the car. Pusl
the tire on the bolts as far as it will
go. Then, tighten the lug nuts, but no'
too tight. Don’t worry; you’ll finish
tightening them later.
Step 9: Lower the car, using the
carjack. Then, tighten the lug nuts,
tightening them in
opposite pairs.
Step 10: Put up your tools, and
don’t forget your flat tire. Drive to
a mechanic, gas station or tire store
and have your flat repaired.
The Four Most Important Tips:
Don’t panic; turn on your
hazard lights.
Loosen the lug nuts, but not
all the way, before raising the
