The Association County Commissioners of Georgia has petitioned the state Public Service Commission in actions that would result in municipal franchise fees being collected only from city residents. It would not allow the city to charge more to customers outside of city limits for utilities, requiring city residents to pay the 2- 4 percent more than those outside the city. The petition would not allow the cities to pass on the franchise fee costs with Georgia Power for use of city rights of way to customers outside of city limits. “It would shift the burden of fees for Georgia Power areas to the cities,” explained City Attorney Jim Elliott. “It won’t affect us too much as most of the city cus tomers are served by Flint Energies. HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Power.” Mayor Donald Walker said two municipalities in Cobb County - Smyrna and Marietta - “came up with thiß. They don’t get along with the county.” The city also decided not to equalize its natural gas pric es, and to continue charging those outside the city about 10 cents more per therm. It’s about $2 in the city and $2.10 for city customers out side city limits. Councilman Terry Horton proposed the change saying “of 70 cities in the state providing gas, we’re the only one with a difference. It puts us in a bad light with the PSC.” Horton said the total reve nue to the city is only $4,000 a year. Walker said the cost is justifiable. “It costs us more to provide service to them. Why should I sub sidize them? It isn’t done arbitrarily or capriciously. It is justified.” Aged Hand-cut Steaks CxH 1M • M 7-877 ()(J' '' PERRY 2031 Highway 41S. 4789871256 140015 r ► Cab ock
