HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Society offers pathway back to the past By JOE SERSEY Journal Correspondent The Central Georgia Genealogical Society, accord ing to a release from the organization, was formed to provide information to genealogists throughout the country regarding court houses and government offices at the local level. The committee was estab lished by the National Genealogical Society, with Mike Brubaker as the Georgia liaison. His job is “to create a net work of individuals and orga nizations within the state to share information on local records, their accessibility and their value to genealogi cal and historical research,” reports correspondence sec retary Sherrie Nelson. The CGGS meets the third Thursday of every month, and Nelson says visitors are always welcome. The local society formed in 1978 and has more than 200 members spread throughout the United States. “(Members) receive four quarterly journals,” Nelson said. “A variety of libraries around the country have subscriptions, and patrons see the quarterly and join to glean other information about this area.” Nelson became a member Community Events ■ THEATRE PERFORMANCE - The Warner Robins Little Theater, which is locat ed at 502 South Pleasant Hill Drive, is presenting Romantic Comedy. Romantic Comedy was made into a movie in 1983 with Dudley Moore as Jason and Mary Steenburgen as Phoebe. The exhibit enti tled “Memory Womb” will remain in the gallery today until Jan. 18, 2007. ■ ARTHRITIS DAY -Arthritis Day will be held today 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Houston Health Pavilion EduCare. Lunch will be served and four sessions will be presented focusing on arthritis. Topics include Houston Healthcare’s Human Motion Institute program, arthritis drugs, pain management and more. I began to think about my side of the family and my husband’s side.” The CGGS offers a large number of books through its website, www.cggs.org, that include such information as public records that provide knowledge on various people. The society also has cem etery and land record books, but the wealth of knowledge is in the members. “We have many knowl edgeable people at our monthly meetings,” Nelson said. “They can give ideas on family research.” Usually, about 20 to 30 people attend the meetings. Nelson said that they always try to have a guest speaker who can speak about genea logical matters. The society also has close ties to Washington Memorial Library in Macon. “It has one of the best genealogical libraries,” Nelson said. “We try to keep a close rela tionship with Washington Memorial.” Nelson said of the local membership, “We are a small group of volunteers,” and they maintain the web- ■ COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS -For anyone deal ing with the loss of a child, Compassionate Friends will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Houston Health Pavilion EduCare Center. ■ WORK SESSION - The Warner Robins City Council work session is scheduled for Thurday at 4 p.m. in the upstairs confer ence room, Warner Robins City Hall, 800 Watson Blvd. ■ FALL BAZAAR - The Fall Bazaar will be held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 336 Carl Vinson Pkwy, Warner Robins, Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will go to mis sion projects such as Project Linus, Preemie Project at Houston Medical Center, Pregnancy Center in Warner Robins and many others. Fresh cinnamon rolls, pies, cakes, breads, a diabetic food corner, and many other homemade craft items as well as a white elephant table will be available.
