Dennard was on the motor squad in the early 70s. “The bikes are safer now,” Dennard said, “with anti lock brakes and adjustable seats, but the traffic is a lot more dangerous. There’s a lot more cars.” The current squad rides 2002 Harley-Davidson Road Kings. The bikes, with 88- cubic-inch (1450 cc) motors, are equipped with every thing the patrol cars have - radios, video cameras and radar units - with the excep tion of the laptop comput ers. There was a brief time when the unit was disbanded fol lowing a serious accident in the mid-80s, in which Officer Tony Cilurso was injured. “He hung on for four-five years, “ Dennard said but succumbed to his injuries March 5, 1990. The unit has been back up since the mid 90s. The unit has used Harley- Davidsons for the most part, Dennard said, with the excep tion of some Kawasaki’s in the 80s, when we had both. “We used to pick at them,” Dennard said. “We’d tell ‘em only real police rode Harleys.” Dennard said his time on the motor squad “was the most fun I had. Dennard remembers the parades the squad partici pated in and some of the stunts they, Dennard includ ed, would do, but didn’t want to talk about. “It was a dif ferent time,” he said. “The chief at the time encouraged it in the parades for PR.” “If we did any of that now, we’d be looking for a job,” Hale said. Dennard remembers the community support, too. “Two or three people would stop and give us cof fee,” he said while the offi cers were out in 17-degree mornings directing traffic onto the base from the Booth Road/Pleasant Hill Road and Moody Road/Watson Road intersections. That was before Watson Road became Russell Parkway and was extended to the base, Dennard said. Area resident David Wittenberg asked Daniel about trucks filling in the wetlands on the property. Wittenberg said a portion of the site is designated as wet lands on county maps. Daniel said the Army Corps of Engineers had not designated the area as wet lands. He said he had a letter from the Corps. The Warner Robins Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman E.L. Greenway suggested tabling a decision so Daniels could answer the questions. Robert Sisa, city planning official said the site will have to be coordinated and addressed by city and county engineers. Sisa also said the individ ual site plans will have to come back to the commis sion. In other business the planning commission: ■ Voted to recommend approval of another rezon ing and annexation in the area same for 1.85 acres for Scott Free from R-AG to C -2. ■ Recommended the annexation of the Flash Foods, 3211 Ga. Highway 247 Connector. It will stay at the C-2 zon ing. The 1-acre site in Peach County at the northeast cor ner of the intersection with Interstate 75 was recently “de-annexed from the city of Byron,” said Tony Rentz from Flash Foods, so it could be annexed into Warner Robins for water and sewer service.
