HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Mac Collins won... Houston County anyway By RAY LIGHTNER Journal Staff Writer The Secretary of State has certified the Nov. 7 election results. Incumbent Jim Marshall, D-Macon, beat out Republican challenger Mac Collins, R-Jackson by 1,751 votes 80,659 to 78,908 or 50.5487 percent to 49.4513 percent. For the District 8 U.S. House seat. The difference of 1,751 votes is 1.09734 percent of the total 159,567 votes cast in the race. The state will do a recount if the difference is 1 percent or less. In Houston County Collins had 16,707 votes or 54.04 percent to Marshall’s 14,180 votes or 45.87 percent. There were also 29 write-ins. Houston County was the largest single source of votes for Collins. Most of Marshall’s votes came from Bibb County with 23,279, with Houston second for Marshall. Collins’ second highest county was Bibb with 13,983 votes. The closest race was in Turner County where Marshall beat out Collins by six votes. The most lopsided was in Worth County where Collins won by two-thirds over Marshall 913 to 451 votes. Collins won 10 others besides Houston and Worth - Bleckley, Butts, Colquitt, Dodge, Irwin, Jasper, Monroe, Newton, Tift and Wilcox. Marshall won 11 precincts and the provisional ballots. He had votes on two of three provisional ballots. Collins won 17 of the 28 precincts in Houston County as well as the absentee votes. There were 6,693 absen tee votes in the District 8 race with Collins getting 3,845 or 57.45 percent to Marshall’s 2,844 or 42.49 percent and there were four write-ins. The second highest vote total for both came from the Feagin Mill Middle School precinct with 1,406 for Collins and 952 for Marshall. FMMS is the largest precinct with 6,418 registered voters. The lowest overall total was 207 votes at the RECR or Warner Robins Recreation Department precinct with 82 votes or 39.61 percent for Collins and 125 votes or 60.39 percent for Marshall. There are only 734 regis tered voters in the precinct.
