For Bears beating Newnan appears to be a lair order
By MATTHEW BROWN

In an expanded playoff system
for high school sports, first-round
games are supposed to be the easy
ones for teams
that win region
championships.
Don’t think,
though, that the
Newnan High

are breathing eas

The No. 1 seed from Region
4-AAAAA has drawn the fourth
place team from Region 1-AAAAA,
the Houston County High Bears.
It’s a Bears team that is only a
few points away from its region
No. 2, maybe even No. 1, seed.
In fact, Houston County
High, which finished 3-3 in 1-
AAAAA, is in the playoffs mainly
because it beat defending state
champion Lowndes High on the
road earlier in the season, and
then Warner Robins High went

Georgia rebounds with a bang
All it takes is one
game and, guess
what, you’re a good
football coach again, Mark

So what was at stake,
what was

nation? You like to think
that the Bulldogs had some
kind of a chance against an
Auburn program on such
a roll over these last few
years.
But with Georgia strug
gling so much in losses to
Vanderbilt and Kentucky
and a win over Mississippi
State, you would also think
such an upset would come
in miraculous fashion.
Maybe Georgia, even in

Houston County’s Martez King (4) looks for running room in the Bears’ loss to Coffee County Saturday in
McConnell-Talbert Stadium. They will travel and play Newnan today.

the good times under Richt,
never really had a swagger,
the kind you associate with
the Miami Hurricane cham
pionship teams.
But it was sure great to at
least get a groove back on
Saturday.
Bragging rights? Playing
for pride? Don’t really per
sonally believe in those
types of statements. There
is still nothing to be proud
about in letting the bottom
tiers of the Southeastern
Conference catch up to you
like it happened this year
for UGA.
I also don’t think any
blue-chip recruit’s deci
sion on where to sign is
swayed by the outcome of
one game.
Would I trade the victory
State runner-up
against Auburn to get the
two wins against Vandy and
the UK Wildcats? Certainly
not. I will repeat myself
when I say that all con
ference games carry the
same value. The standings
don’t care about rivalries or
rankings.
I’ll take all three of them
as wins, topped off with
wins against Florida and
Tennessee.
What else happened on
Saturday? Freshman quar
terback Matthew Stafford
showed me that he could
play and win in a big-time
atmosphere. I told an old
friend of mine that you
have to have a quarterback
in order to compete in the
SEC.

Demonettes tip off
year with scrimmage
From staff reports
Basketball has begun
and Warner Robins’ girls
are off and running. The
Demonettes hosted Taylor
County for a scrimmage
Tuesday.
At first glance, it would
appear the Lady Vikings
from Butler, a AA team, will
be the ones to beat come
state tournament time.
After all they did win 62-

Warner Robins actu

try during the third quarter.
Not that he didn’t like what
he saw but as a result the
Demonettes’ lead went to a
