College of Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences rec
ognized Perry High School
agricultural teacher and FFA
advisor Dr. Argene Claxton
with the Alumni Association’s
Award of Excellence at
their annual banquet, held
at the Classic Center in
Athens Sept. 16. This award
is given to alumnus of the
College of Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences
who has excelled in his/her
chosen field or community.
Darryl Albritton, principal
of Perry High School said,
“His caring attitude with
students, teachers, admin
istrators and community
has earned him an enviable
reputation as an excellent
teacher who truly cares
about his profession.”
Claxton has been the agri
cultural teacher and FFA
advisor for Perry High School
for the past 26 years. He
has been named the school’s
STAR teacher two times and
has been honored as Teacher
of the Year twice by school
faculty.
As FFA advisor, Claxton
has led his students to suc
ceed on many state and
national levels. Five of his
students have gone on to
become State FFA officers.
Claxton has coached six
National FFA winners in
forestry, nursery landscape,
floriculture, forestry profi
ciency and public speaking.
He has led students to 35
state winning senior teams
and 19 top 10 finishes at
nationals. He has also had a
National Proficiency Winner
as well. Another great accom
plishment is being advisor of
the National FFA President.
“His enthusiasm, his inno
vativeness and his genuine
concern ‘that all children
can learn’ are exemplary,”
said Albritton.
Claxton also encouraged
his students to participate in
community services activi
ties, like growing and plant
ing flowers around the city
of Perry to beautify the com
munity.
Claxton is married to
Sandy Whiddon Claxton and
they have two beautiful chil
dren, Katie, 16, and Tyler,
11. His parents are B.H. and
Lanell Claxton of Hazlehurst.
Both of Argene’s parents
are retired educators. His
father served 40 years as
a Vocational Agriculture
teacher himself.
