We did that in the summer and it worked well. “Rashad Turner played a good bit last year. He and Jon have improved as much as any players I’ve ever seen from one year to the next, especially from the junior to the senior year. Rashad’s going to be a good inside outside player for us. “Ryan Stallings is our only returning starter. He’s better now (shooting) than he was last year. He’s added another dimension or two to his game. I asked him over the summer to con tinue working on his shot. Everybody’s going to be kill ing themselves getting out there to him, so I wanted him to add the pump-fake and the drive. He’s done that.” Other notable football players who are expected to enhance the basketball team are Eric O’Neal, Lydel Jones and Dexter Holman. Nix said Holman played CLEATS :ome OSIA -""V J BAILEY I [ S>TOP OWiV, IMG > i ?.HAKE ft /r °vei? that law A OFF I J PLAY AMP GET YOU* . 4J= » IMTO THE GAME 51 j\~ -vi. PEE'?. It’s a little smaller, but it’s a very quick team. We still have an inside pres ence, but I think we’ll be quicker, which I like because of the press. We’ll hopefully score more points off our defense.” Houston County has on its schedule before Christmas two home at-homes with West Laurens and Perry, a post-Thanksgiving trip to Brunswick for a two-game classic, Northside at home and the annual Bear Brawl. That will take the team into January, which is also the time Nix hopes to find out what the lineup and rota tion will be. But it is a team that has grown up together, had a .500 season as freshmen, won 10 games on junior var sity, then last year was a part of a region winner and state quarterfinalist in Class ,;::. make?, you \ ! =7 THIMK I’M OBWW.IMG ] l over the law play’ J ) 2006 Bill Huuis .:.sl by u'niveisjl Press :»yndi. ..He IHg e-mail Cieatsmail@ao! com A ,- ( — 1 I WOMPEP c f wUAT HE ' (c) 2006 Bi*l Hinds Dist by Universal Piess Syndicate^ THE HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL AAAAA. To defend the region title, the Bears must contend with a school it plays year after year anyway, Warner Robins High. The Demons moved up from AAAA last year to join all of the usual challengers from seasons past. “Right off the bat, I think (the Demons) are a top two team,” said Nix. “They have a group of seniors, too. Those seniors have a little more experience than ours. We always have good games, but now the games mean more. “(Tift) lost everybody except for one or two. But they have tradition, and they’re just going to move up everybody and be com petitive. Coffee County has everybody back. They were playing their best basketball at the end of the season. Colquitt County lost all their starters except for one.” Valdosta brought in Rufus McDuffie as boys basket ball coach. He followed Rick Tomberlin, the new football coach, from Washington County. McDuffie won sev eral state championships at Mitchell-Baker. www gocomics com e-mail Cleatsnaii@aol com~ /f!OPY\ ( lamgoage J • f 41282
