♦ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2006 6A Daddy, why don't we eat dinosaurs? The lesson began where most of my wisdom is dispensed - in the corner booth at the Dairy Queen. “Daddy, why don’t we eat dinosaurs?” My 4-year-old son asked before a kids’ meal of chicken fingers and fries. “Uh, what do you mean?” “Why don’t we eat dino saurs? We eat cows and chickens and milk,” he asked earnestly. “Why don’t we eat dinosaurs?” “Well, son, they’re no lon ger around,” I explained. “They’re extinct.” His little blonde brow fur rowed. “We don’t eat them because they stink? Then why does mommy eat cabbage?” A good question indeed. “No, son, they are EX TINCT,” I stated slowly. “That means they are no longer alive. There aren’t Reconciliation from Vietnam to Iraq Vietnam and the United States “have a history,” in the nega tive sense of the colloquial expression. Last week’s trip to Hanoi by President George W. Bush was about forging a new, positive relationship - a new and better history. After notingthat Vietnam’s prime minister had educated his children in the United States, Bush observed, “It shows how hopeful the world can be and how people can reconcile and move beyond past difficulties for the com mon good.” Bush used the tough but necessary word: reconcile. Yes, a realpolitik energizes the emerging U.S.-Vietnam rapprochement. Vietnam worries about Asia’s “Colossus of the North,” China. The Vietnamese believe a solid Hanoi- Washington relationship will A MACON REGIONAL & t%%l,MesrOPf>ER$LJ Help so{ve A Crime 742-2330 • 1-877-68 CHIME (27463) Rewards of up to *I,OOO - Remain Anonymous! He chewed on that for a while, and his chicken strip. “Well, daddy, I saw a real, counter Chinese hegemony. Washington and Hanoi want to establish a mutually advantageous trading rela tionship. In colloquial terms, that trans lates as, “Let’s make money together.” Capitalist victory? You bet. In Vietnam, commu nism is kaput as IhL : Austin Bay Military Affairs Creators Syndicate an economic model it is litter in history’s dustbin. But realpolitik, without the solidifying bond of rec onciliation, is politically frail. On TV On that movie you watched with me - Youassmic Park,” he said in a flurry of conviction and mispronunciation. “That was Jurassic Park, and that was a movie. Make believe. Like a cartoon. It’s not real. Trust me,” I said to deflated ears. He was about to disagree once again, but I gave him “the look.” He knew better and dipped a french fry in his self-proclaimed “ketchup puddle.” It gave him time to think. “Daddy, if the dinosaurs are dead, when did they die?” A number of American Vietnam War veterans have visited Vietnam, many mak ing their own separate peace. Vietnamese-Americans have also increased contacts with their “old country,” includ ing re-establishing family ties. As the country opens for business, Vietnam’s Communist Party will even tually confront empow ered domestic critics. The Communists’ depredations will require Vietnamese examination and recon ciliation. Vietnam may ulti mately consider some form of domestic “reconciliation commission.” Cynics tend to dismiss “reconciliation commis sions” as feel-good gestures, but this is another case of cynicism masking ignorance, for these commissions offer hope to deeply fissured soci eties. I’m only hundreds of years old,” 1 said to ears of no understanding. “Daddy, why did they die?” Thank God I had just taken a huge bite out of my double cheeseburger. Gave me time to do some thinking. “Well,” I said with a swal low. “Sometimes, species can’t adapt to their envi ronment and nature ren ders them extinct. They don’t have what it takes, example is South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).Thecom mission was established in 1995 by then-South African President and 1993 Nobel laureate Nelson Mandela. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, another Nobel Peace Prize winner, served as chairman. The goal wasn’t punishment for crimes per se, but open examination of suffering and suffering’s individual and societal consequences. Clinical psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela served on the commission. She also personally wit nessed a massacre in 1960. Her book, “A Human Being Died That Night,” chronicles her own personal struggle with forgiveness in the face of great evil - while acknowledging that forgive ness is essential if South Africa had any chance of See BAY, page SA [ eHRIHSL Hr Cefebrate Your Littfe One's Tirst Cfiristmas QLCI Wit ft This ‘Unique . fifforefa file Yieeysake That ‘Kims mWmLi December 23, 2006 l Fill out the infor mation below and 'lg! bring in or mail mm Wmp ?§ggj|||, your baby's photo, L!
