The Corps was greatly criticized in June when it accidentally released 22 bil lion gallons of water from the lake, a major source of drinking water for the fast growing Atlanta metropoli tan area. The first meeting, to be held at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville, will be followed by sessions in Atlanta, LaGrange, Dothan, Ala., and ending on Dec. 6 in Tallahassee, Fla. - all areas that are greatly impacted by the water release. The Corps is preparing an envi ronmental impact statement on proposed water storage contracts in Lake Lanier. “We have to look at the (Apalachicola- Chattahoochee-Flint river) basin as a whole system,” said Marilyn Phipps, a spokeswoman for the Corps’ Mobile district. “The amount of water stored in the lake could affect wildlife down stream.” Critics have been accus ing the Corps of operating with outdated information and releasing too much water downstream to sus tain endangered mussels and sturgeons in Florida’s Apalachicola River, at the expense of residents farther north. Georgia has said the Corps is sending too much water to Florida. But Florida con tends it needs even more water to protect the Gulf sturgeon fish and rare fresh water mussels. Alabama wants a steady supply of water to meet its industrial YOUR WEATHER TEAM! TODAY’S j Today's Weather [Local 5-Day Forecast Wed 11/29 < i 79/58 More clouds than sun. Phipps said the statement could change how Lake Lanier is managed. “It’s possible that the nor mal full pool will be set at a different level,” she said. Ron Seder, a member of the Lake Lanier Association, says that the group’s con cern is to establish a mini mum that the lake wouldn’t be allowed to drop below, even during a drought. “Anybody who lives in this area ought to be interest ed in how low we’re gonna allow that lake to go,” Seder said. Temple seeks pardon trom Bush AUGUSTA (AP) - The former campaign manag er of Linda Schrenko, the Georgia schools superinten dent in prison for embez zling $600,000 in federal education money, is request ing a pardon from President Bush. Merle Temple said in an undated letter to the presi dent that he is asking for a pardon because of his wife’s medical condition. “I would not ask for a full pardon, but my wife has suffered a massive stroke, and I fear I will never see her again,” he wrote in the letter. Temple, 58, of Evans, was the deputy superinten dent and eventually became Schrenko’s campaign man ager in her failed 2002 guber natorial bid. In court, he was also described as Schrenko’s lover. He was sentenced to eight years and one month in pris on in September. He pleaded guilty in January 2005 to charges of conspiracy, theft of federal funds and wire fraud. Temple cited his his tory of public service and the absence of any criminal history as reasons for his pardon request. But if the pardon cannot be granted, he asked that his sentence be shortened to a three-year term with credit for time served, according to the let ter. Temple’s attorney, John T. Garcia, argued for a lesser sentence during Temple’s September sentencing hear ing because the former aide takes care of his ill wife, who has diabetes and has suf fered multiple strokes and several heart attacks.
