Easy pairings make pears a top pick

Maybe it’s all in the name,
but pears are naturally a
good partner with many dif
ferent
Flavors and there are
plenty of good ones now.
Winter is the peak pear
season, when USA Pears
from the Pacific Northwest
grace produce departments
all over the country.
So if you haven’t experi
mented with pears yet, now
is the right time to start
picking up this friendly fruit.
Below are just a few pairings
ideas for sweet, juicy pears!
No matter how you pair up
your pear, make sure your
pears are ripe before enjoy
ing them!
To ripen, place hard,
unripe pears in a paper bag
or fruit bowl at room tem
perature.

There’s more than one way to enjoy pears. They are an elegant addition to salads and
go well with cheese.

Mix butter, sugar and
almond extract thorough
ly using an electric mixer.
Gradually blend in flour and
corn starch. Add chopped
cherries.
Form into 1-inch balls and
place on ungreased baking
sheets. Pour sugar on a
small plate; dip bottom of
drinking glass in sugar and
gently press down on each
cookie to flatten. Press a
slivered almond into the
center of each cookie.
Bake in a preheated 300 9 F
oven for 25 to 30 minutes,
or until bottoms begin to
brown.
Cool for five minutes;
remove to a wire rack to
cool completely. Lightly
sprinkle additional sugar on
top of cookies while cooling,
if desired.
Recipe note: For European
style shortbread, turn dough
onto a lightly floured surface
and knead until smooth,
about two minutes. Pat into
a 1/3-inch thick rectangle
measuring 11 x 8-inches. Cut
