Leaders launch interstate campaign ALBANY (AP) - Business and government leaders have launched a campaign to extend Interstate 185 from Columbus to Montecello, Fla., a move they say would generate jobs and econom ic growth in rural south western Georgia and relieve crowding on Interstate 75. Officials of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce announced plans Monday to host a meeting of county and city officials on Dec. 12 to discuss the proposal. If there’s enough support, they’ll present a resolution to state lawmakers and to the Georgia Department of Transportation, which could use federal highway funds to finance the project. “From the preliminary discussions we’ve had so far, everyone’s excited about the possibilities,” said Clifford Porter, the chamber’s direc tor of governmental affairs. From Columbus to Albany, the proposed 200-mile inter state extension would follow the path of existing State Route 520, also known as Corridor Z. Then it would follow another four-lane highway, U.S. Route 19, through Camilla, Pelham and Thomasville and con nect with Interstate 10 in Come See Our Newly Expanded Showroom! It is widely believed that Albany’s economy would be more robust if some of the town’s wheeler-dealers hadn’t rejected Interstate 75 years ago. Instead, that interstate was build through Tifton, 40 miles to the east. 1-75 has become a major North-South tourist route, and a thriving travel indus try has developed in Tifton, Valdosta, Cordele and other towns along the highway to serve the 40,000 vehicles - 100,000 during holidays and peak travel times - that use the route each day. }|(|l£ •> i.-MAX f I gM# 835M3 929-2701 929-0624 2508 Moody Road 00040054 Enjoy the Internet at high speed from Com South.
