Man re-sentenced
for burning woman
ROME (AP) - A man was
re-sentenced Wednesday to
20 years in prison without
parole for burning his girl
friend to death.
Eddie Lamar Sanders,
51, had been convicted
and sentenced in October
2004 for the murder of Ann
Strickland.
Prosecutors said Sanders
doused Strickland with gas
oline after an argument in,
October 2003 and set her on
fire with a cigarette lighter.
But the Georgia Supreme
Court in October overturned
his life-without-parole sen
tence and required that he
be re-sentenced.
Although the state’s high
est court said the evidence
was sufficient to find Sanders
guilty of three felony mur
der counts, it said the jury
also found Sanders guilty of
voluntary manslaughter.
“The defendant cannot
be convicted and sentenced
for felony murder because
the voluntary manslaughter
verdict indicates that the
underlying felony is mitigat
ed by provocation and pas
sion,” the court ruled.
Floyd County Superior
Court Judge Walter J.
Matthews handed down the
maximum penalty.
“I thought life without
parole was a fitting sentence
(so) I have no problem sen
tencing you to the maximum
of 20 years,” Matthews said.
“Nobody has ever conced
ed it was an accident. The
Supreme Court never said
there was anything acciden
tal about this.”

Jodi Shupe of the Rockdale
County Sheriff’s Office.
Jackson and his 29-year
old wife, who have been sep
arated since July, have five
children ranging in age from
1 to 13 years old, Shupe
said. Jackson apparently
started fighting with his wife
after she and the children
returned to their Conyers
home on Thanksgiving.
At one point during the
fight, Jackson allegedly
attempted to stuff his wife
inside the kitchen oven,
which had been left on to
heat the house, Shupe said.
The woman escaped and
went to the sheriffs office
