childhood, so he could help
his family.
With that in mind, West did
not leave education behind,
rather he finished later and
got a diploma.
In the interim, however,
he joined the Navy, serving
aboard several ships - from
1950 through 1954. In one
tale of his journey, a destroy
er he was assigned to spent
harrowing days in the sea
off the Korean coast of the
19505.
When he returned to the
county, he began working on
base part time. There, he cut
hair for the many military
customers.
When he first started it
was 50 cents.
One of those who sat in
his barber chair letting their
worries go for a few minutes
was Lester Maddux.
“Maddux was campaigning
through Houston County,”
he recalled. “He wanted me
to vote for him. Taking a
minute, I finally said sure I
will vote for you if you will
let me cut your hair?”
Maddux shook his head
and sat down.
Another celebrity to
engage in barber-chair-talk
was, Gov. Sonny Perdue.
In fact, he came in several
times during the 60s, West
noted.
And the list of celebrities
has continued throughout
the years.
And then there are the
“very noticeable” changes
he’s seen in Perry.
“Subdivisions have tripled
throughout the county,” he
said. “What was once farm is
now houses, meaning a lot of
new folks in the county.
“It changes us some,” he
added.
Barbering, too, has changed
a lot. Barbering colleges now
go into so many things and
have specialties that you
see in the big stores now.
Electric clippers - instead of
handheld - changes the time
it takes to cut hair. Still hair
cutting is more than a busi
ness, West believes. There is
always time for conversation
and a smile.
In February 2007 he and
his wife Margaret, a retired
banker, will have been mar
ried 55 years.
Retirement is an issue West
has resolved, as well. He said
when he turns 89 then it will
be time. Until then, the bar
ber pole will still be turning
to signal open for business.

impact on our local economy

said Dr. Tony Alford, CEO
of Houston Healthcare. “We
appreciate our community’s
support through the years,
and we are pleased to be
able to enhance the econom
ic viability of our area while
continuing to provide high
quality, cost effective health
care services to the people

The report also indicated
that, during the same time
period, Houston Healthcare
provided approximately S2O
million in uncompensated
care while sustaining more
than 1,700 full-time jobs
throughout Houston County
and the middle Georgia
area.

And that’s a partial list.

The silence from AP (and
the rest of the media, for
that matter) comes as no
surprise.
This is, after all, the same
organization that sat on
the news for five months
that one of its Iraqi-based
stringers, Bilal Hussein, had
been and remains in deten

U.S. military forces with an

asking them questions and a
mammoth hush will fall over
newsrooms faster than you
can press “mute.”
