Are we really alone in the universe?
NASA’s recent photos
of a hurricane-like
storm, 5,000 miles
wide, churning at Saturn’s
South Pole with winds howl
ing at 350 mph, prompted
me to ponder if intelligent
life existed on the second
largest planet, and if so,
could this life survive such
a storm. The size of our uni
verse is incomprehensible.
We live in the Milky Way
Galaxy.
Our sun is only one star
among millions of stars
in our galaxy. Beyond the
Milky Way, scientists esti
mate there are an additional
50 billion galaxies swirling
in outer space. In a universe
so vast, is it reasonable to
assume that intelligent life

Teach facts and concepts for a well-rounded student
Question: I assume that
you favor a highly structured
curriculum that emphasizes
the memorization of facts,
which I consider to be a
very low level of learning.
We need to teach concepts to
our kids and help them learn
how to think not just fill
their heads with a bunch of
details.
Dr. Dobson: I agree that
we should teach concepts
to students, but that does
not occur in a vacuum. For
example, we would like them
to understand the concept of
the solar system and how
the planets are positioned in
rotation around the sun. How
is that done? One way is for
them to learn the distances
between the heavenly bod
ies, i.e., the sun is 93 million
miles from Earth, but the
moon is only 240,000. The
concept of relative positions
is then understood from the
factual information. What
I’m saying is that an under
standing of the right factual
information can, and should,

Dr. Dobson:l doubt if
there is anything wrong

advanced extraterrestrial
civilizations existed in the
Milky Way, why no evidence
of their existence had been

Some theologians have
suggested that the “sons of
God” who married earthly
women (Genesis 6:2) were
actually extraterrestrials
who came to earth.
After NASA’s Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence
program was cancelled by a
budget-conscious Congress
in 1993, Project Phoenix,
privately funded, was found
ed to continue the search for
extraterrestrial intelligence.
Trent, described this tech
nique in their book “The
Language of Love.” In it,
Gary told a story about how
his wife, Norma, was very
frustrated with him. Gary
would come home from work
and clam up. He had noth
ing to say all evening.
Finally, Norma told him
a story about a man who
went to breakfast with some
friends. He ate a big meal
and then gathered up some
crumbs and put them in a
bag. Then he went to lunch
with some business associ
ates and ate a big steak.
Again, he put a few crumbs
in a doggie bag to take with
him. When he came home
that night, he handed his
wife the little bag of left
overs.
“That’s what you are doing
to me,” said Norma. “All day

talk with you when you get
home. But you don’t share
yourself with us. After being

Project Phoenix, using a
1,000 foot radio telescope in
Puerto Rico, listens for radio
signals either deliberately
beamed our way or inad
vertently transmitted from
another planet.
It targets one thousand
stars within 200 light-years
of earth most likely to host
planets capable of support

signals are the “signature”
of an intelligent transmis

signals between 1,000 and
3,000 MHz.
The “listening” is done by
computers. So far, no clearly
extraterrestrial transmis

just a few months ago.
Now, we are seeing the
radiance of Christmas
2006 everywhere we go.
Christmas is such a mar

Thoughts are directed
more to the spirit of giving
from the heart. We want to
go out and shop for gifts
for special people. We want
to give more to the less for

helping hands to those with
special needs.
We find Christmas at
the bedside of bedridden
patients. We find Christmas
in the sparkling eyes of
excited children. We find
Christmas in the Salvation
Army bell ringers. We find
Christmas right where
we are when our hearts
are in tune with God.
I especially enjoy hearing
songs of the season fill the
air during Christmas time.
