Tax donations help
several groups
ATLANTA (MNS)
- Georgia taxpayers used
their tax returns this year to
make donations to a variety
of groups, from families of
those serving in the Georgia
National Guard to animals
like the loggerhead turtle
and the North Atlantic right
whale.
Using check-off boxes on
their tax forms for the 2005
tax year, Georgians dedicated
$1.3 million of their refunds
or chipped in additional
money besides the tax owed,
the Department of Revenue
announced recently. And the
donations are tax deduct
ible. The donations, which
were recently delivered to
the organizations they’re
meant to benefit, include:
■ $364,675.14 for
the Georgia Wildlife
Conservation Fund
■ $363,333.52 for the
Georgia Cancer Research
Fund
■ $261,285.19 for the
Georgia Fund for Children
and Elderly
■ $216,102.98 for the
Georgia Greenspace Trust
Fund
■ $107,559.40 for the
Georgia National Guard
Foundation.
The donation for the guard
group is a new one, created
by the General Assembly
last year as part of a package
of bills meant to compensate
for out-of-state deployment.
The largest chunk of the
money went to the Georgia
Wildlife Conservation
Funds, where it pays for
a variety of initiatives to
try to protect endangered
or threatened species, said
Mike Harris, chief of the
non-game conservation sec
tion at the Department of
Natural Resources.
