AP)-AGeorgia state senator’s Colombia born wife who faced depor tation was released Tuesday after meeting with an immi gration judge who lifted the deportation order. Sascha Herrera, 28, who had gone into hiding after the order was issued, turned herself in Tuesday morning and met with an immigra tion judge and attorneys for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office. Herrera and her husband, state Sen. Curt Thompson, D-Norcross, emerged from the federal building hand in-hand shortly before 9:30 a.m. “I’m fine. I’m relieved,” Herrera said. “When I first came here I was very scared. I’m glad the government agreed to reopen my case.” Government lawyer Terry Bird said the judge lifted the order and agreed to reopen her case. Bird said a hear ing - which has yet to be scheduled - will be held on a petition filed by Herrera’s husband to establish perma nent residency for Herrera. Bird said she would likely be freed Tuesday, pending the new hearing. Herrera’s lawyer, Charles Kuck, said although the deportation order has been lifted, Herrera is still techni cally in deportation proceed ings. He said he expects the hearing will be held in the next two to four months on her green card for perma nent residency. Bird said the judge’s review of Herrera’s residen cy status could put her on track for a chance to become a U.S. citizen. Steven Solomon, who joined the Atlanta Fire Department four months ago after six years with the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, died last week of burn injuries. “It’s not the length of a person’s life but the depth of what he did that matters, and I think the number of folks in this auditorium (is) a true testament,” Atlanta Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said during the two-hour service held at the Macon Coliseum. The widow of the 33-year old firefighter, Kennetha Solomon, said he was her best friend and a wonder ful husband who cooked, cleaned, changed diapers and would even massage her feet after she got home from work.
