What everyone should
know about life insurance
State Point Media
It’s one of those things we
usually put off f<>r tomorrow,
like cleaning out the garage
or bringing the car in for
a tune-up. Although people
widely recognize the impor
tance of life insurance in
financially protecting their
families, most need signifi
cant help in determining
the type and amount of cov
erage that is appropriate at
different life stages.
A good rule of thumb is to
review your life insurance
policy yearly and update
it to reflect any major life
changes - such as marriage,
the birtfi of a child, divorce
or a spouse’s death.
However, most of us are
unprepared when it comes
to this important safety
net. According to research
conducted by the National
Association of Insurance
Commissioners (NAIC),
nearly two-thirds of young
families believe it’s “very
important” for both spous
es to have life insurance,
yet fewer than half say they
actually have purchased
insurance for either spouse.
And across all life stages,
around 40 percent of con
sumers fail to review their
life insurance policies annu

focus on what’s important.
■ Know each other’s love
language (how your spouse
gives and receives love). It
may just take a kiss and a
loving word when you get
home to make them feel
validated and help them
survive the rest of the day.
The second list is a bit
shorter, but a lot tougher:
■ Take a serious look at
your lifestyle and see if it’s
what you really want for
your family and for your

ally.
That’s why the NAIC is
offering free advice detail
ing what all of us should
know:
Start by considering how
many people are financial
ly dependent on you, what
their major expenses are
likely to be and whether
you’re likely to leave them
with substantial debts or
taxes to pay on your estate.
Life insurance can help on
all of those fronts.
Then evaluate the two
main types of life insur
ance: term and permanent.
As its name implies, term
life insurance pays a death
benefit if you pass away
within a specified time peri
od (typically a term of one
to 20 years). In contrast,
permanent life insurance
includes both a death ben
efit and the ability to build
up cash value over your
entire lifetime. In general,
term life insurance is less
expensive than permanent
life.
Understand the major
factors that can affect life
insurance premiums. Some
are uncontrollable, like the
age at which one purchases
a policy or a serious pre
existing medical condition,
like cancer or heart dis
kids’ future. Remember,
you are setting the example
for future generations of
husbands, wives and par
ents.
■ Consider making tough
decisions that will allow you
more freedom to spend time
with your family Turn down
the promotion, decline the
job that requires extensive
travel or 60-hour weeks and
accept the one that requires
40, look into a new line of
work altogether.
II Reset your financial
expectations. You can’t take
it with you, so why spend so
much time seeking to get it?
ease.
Other factors are much
more dependent on an indi
vidual’s behavior, like poor
health habits (like smok
ing and excessive drinking),
driving record, engaging in
dangerous hobbies (such
as sky diving, car racing
or rock climbing) and even
where you live.
According to the NAIC,
young singles who want to
be sure'that they can get
life insurance later in their
lives when they may devel
op health problems should
consider purchasing term
life insurance that is guar
anteed to be renewable.
Young families, mean
while, should consider pur
chasing life insurance for
both spouses to help pay for
childcare and other domes
tic services. At this life stage,
term insurance may be the
most cost effective. Some
parents purchase small life
insurance policies for their
newborns to guarantee that
they’ll have some insurance
if they develop health prob
lems.
For their part, established
families should consider
the probable costs of their
children’s college education
when determining how
See LIFE, page 6A
What if you downsized your
home or car, your standard
of living? You may find that
one spouse can stop work
ing and carry more of the
load of family management,
thereby leaving the whole
family less encumbered
with busy-ness.
Take your pick; select a
few or all of the items on the
lists to show your spouse
and your kids how impor
tant they are to you. For
some of the actions it takes
commitment and rare cour
age; for others, just going
a little out of your way can
mean so much.
